## The Mooney Problem

There is no such thing as buying "a Mooney." The M20 family spans six decades and a price range from $50,000 to over $400,000. Buyers who walk into the market looking for "a Mooney" come out confused, because the M20C and the M20R Ovation are not the same aircraft in any meaningful sense — same DNA, profoundly different machines.

This guide cuts through the variant proliferation using data from 2,804 real Mooney transactions. Every pricing figure you see here comes from our own database of aircraft that actually sold. No estimates, no guesswork.

## What All M20s Share

Before getting into variants, a few things that define every M20:

**The forward-swept tail.** Mooney's signature. Structurally unusual, aerodynamically effective, and responsible for much of the M20's drag reduction. It also means every Mooney looks unmistakably like a Mooney.

**The short cabin.** The M20 was not designed for tall pilots. Anyone over 6'1" will be uncomfortable, and some will find it a dealbreaker. Sit in one before you buy.

**Manual gear on early models, electric on later ones.** The short-body M20C, E, and F all have manual gear, operated by a Johnson bar between the seats. The long-body M20J onward uses electric gear. Both systems have produced landing gear incidents; the FAA has issued multiple service bulletins and a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin on the M20 gear system.

**Wet wings.** All M20s use integral fuel tanks. The good news: lots of fuel. The bad news: they eventually leak. A full tank reseal can run $8,000–$12,000 and is a when, not an if, on anything over twenty years old.

**Low prop clearance.** Mooney kept the nose low for aerodynamic reasons. Prop clearance is roughly 9–10 inches. Soft fields and ruts that any other GA aircraft would ignore can result in a prop strike — with all the inspection costs that follow.

## The Short-Body Mooneys: M20C, M20E, M20F (1961–1977)

The original M20 fuselage was short, making these aircraft slightly more compact in the cabin. All three share the same basic airframe; the differences are in the engine and equipment.

### M20C — The Entry-Level Mooney

**Production:** 1961–1977
**Engine:** Lycoming O-360, 180hp, carburetted
**Cruise:** 140–147 knots at 75% power
**Fuel burn:** 9–10 GPH
**Our data:** 533 transactions | Median price **$68,000** | Range $10k–$149k

The M20C is the most affordable entry into Mooney ownership. It is also the slowest. The carburetted 180hp Lycoming is simple, bulletproof, and cheap to maintain — but it is 20 horsepower and the better part of 10 knots behind its siblings.

What the M20C has going for it: low acquisition cost, low engine operating cost, and the same handling characteristics as every other M20. If your mission is weekend trips under IFR and you want the most Mooney per dollar, the C gets you there.

**Watch for:** Wooden wing spars on early (pre-1968) models. Several prominent Mooney shops have said they won't work on wood-structure Mooneys due to the complexity of inspections and unavailability of parts. Avoid pre-1968 aircraft unless you have a shop that specialises in them and has inspected the airframe recently.

### M20E — The Sweet Spot of the Short Body

**Production:** 1964–1975
**Engine:** Lycoming IO-360, 200hp, fuel-injected
**Cruise:** 150–155 knots at 75% power
**Fuel burn:** 9–10 GPH
**Our data:** 381 transactions | Median price **$75,000** | Range $8k–$250k

The M20E adds 20 horsepower and fuel injection for roughly $7,000 more at the median — outstanding value. Owner reports consistently put real-world cruise at 150–155 knots on the same 9–10 GPH as the C. That is genuine cross-country speed at trainer fuel burns.

The E also sells faster than most M20s: 96 days average on the market, versus 117 for the C and 130 for the J. This may reflect its value positioning — buyers recognise the combination of fuel injection, 200hp, and a manageable price point.

**Watch for:** Same wooden spar caution applies to early E models. Look for aircraft with documented recent annual inspections from a Mooney-specialist shop.

### M20F — The Long-Nosed One

**Production:** 1967–1977
**Engine:** Lycoming IO-360, 200hp, fuel-injected
**Cruise:** 145–152 knots
**Fuel burn:** 9–10 GPH
**Our data:** 335 transactions | Median price **$87,000** | Range $20k–$199k

Mooney stretched the fuselage for the M20F, adding several inches of cabin length and moving the panel forward to create more legroom. The result is a more comfortable airplane that is also 4–6 knots slower than the E because of the increased frontal area.

The F is the most expensive of the short-body three, yet slower than the E. The extra cabin space justifies the premium for some buyers; for others, the M20J offers a cleaner, more modern answer at a predictable premium.

**Watch for:** The M20F market is smaller and slower-moving than the C and E. Budget for a thorough pre-purchase inspection — these aircraft are old enough to have significant deferred maintenance.

## The Long-Body Revolution: M20J (1977–1998)

In 1977, Mooney redesigned the airframe and produced the M20J, marketed as the "201" after its 201-mph top speed. It was a step-change improvement: new cowling, revised airframe fairings, completely reworked systems. The J is the benchmark M20.

### M20J — The One Most People Mean When They Say "Mooney"

**Production:** 1977–1998 (201, 205, MSE, Allegro, AT variants)
**Engine:** Lycoming IO-360-A3B6, 200hp, fuel-injected
**Cruise:** 150–158 knots at 75% power
**Fuel burn:** 10 GPH
**Our data:** 637 transactions | Median price **$125,000** | Range $12k–$348k

The M20J is the most liquid Mooney in the market. 637 transactions in our database; 553 with reliable days-to-sell data, averaging 130 days. The J is well-supported by shops and parts suppliers, has an extensive type club (Mooney International Pilots Association), and is the aircraft that most Mooney reviews, STC modifications, and online resources are written about.

The J's Lycoming IO-360 is arguably the most reliable engine in GA. Owner reports routinely see 1,800–2,000 hours between overhauls with proper care. Compare that to the M20K's Continental TSIO-360, which has had owners changing it at 1,200–1,400 hours.

Prices have risen substantially since 2019 ($99k average) to 2024 ($162k average), driven by post-pandemic demand. The 2025 average was $146k as the market normalised.

## The Turbo: M20K (1979–1997)

### M20K 231 — Approach With Caution

**Production:** 1979–1984
**Engine:** Continental TSIO-360-GB, turbocharged, 210hp
**Cruise:** 185–195 knots at altitude
**Our data:** Part of M20K pool (557 transactions total)

The 231 was Mooney's first turbocharged M20, and it showed. The Continental TSIO-360-GB engine had chronic reliability problems: the fixed wastegate meant the turbo was working constantly, cutting turbo life to 400–700 hours. The engine itself rarely made it to its published 1,800-hour TBO; field experience puts the real figure at 1,200–1,400 hours. Some cylinder variants developed unrepairable valve cracks.

The practical result: a 231 is a maintenance project masquerading as an aircraft.

**Recommendation:** If you want an M20K, skip the 231 and buy a 252.

### M20K 252 — The Fixed Version

**Production:** 1986–1997 (plus later Encore variant)
**Engine:** Continental TSIO-360-MBI, intercooled, 210hp
**Cruise:** 190–195 knots
**Our data:** 557 M20K transactions | Median price **$159,000** | Range $45k–$990k

Mooney substantially redesigned the 252: intercooled engine, variable wastegate, improved cooling, upgraded electrical system. The 252 is a fundamentally different aircraft from the 231. Owner satisfaction is high. It still requires attentive engine management compared to a naturally aspirated Lycoming, but it is a reliable aircraft in capable hands.

The 252 delivers legitimate high-altitude cruise performance — 190+ knots above 20,000 feet — that the normally aspirated M20J cannot match. For buyers who regularly fly long cross-countries in IMC, the 252 delivers what the 231 promised.

**Watch for:** Induction system cracks and tube failures at the mounting flanges are documented on the 252. A thorough pre-buy at a Mooney shop is essential.

## The Flagship: M20R Ovation (1993–present)

### M20R Ovation — The Best M20 Built

**Production:** 1993–present (Ovation, Ovation2, Ovation3 variants)
**Engine:** Continental IO-550G, 280hp
**Cruise:** 170–175 knots at 75% power
**Fuel burn:** 13–15 GPH
**Our data:** 361 transactions | Median price **$274,900** | Range $116k–$807k

The Ovation is the normally aspirated answer to the 252: more horsepower, more speed, fewer turbocharger concerns. The Continental IO-550G is a wide-displacement engine that produces its power at comparatively low RPM, which owners report translates to good reliability and acceptable fuel burn.

Counterintuitively, the Ovation sells faster than the M20J: 116 days average versus 130 days for the J. A $274k asking price sells faster than a $125k one — the Ovation buyers know what they want and move when they find the right one.

Prices have held steady in recent years: $283k average in 2025 vs $289k in 2024. Unlike the M20J, which saw dramatic post-pandemic appreciation and subsequent correction, the Ovation market has been remarkably stable.

**Watch for:** Fuel tank leaks are more expensive to fix on the Ovation given the larger wing. Budget for a full reseal if the aircraft hasn't had one, and check carefully during pre-buy.

## Which Mooney Is Right for You?

**Under $80,000, weekend IFR flying:** M20E. You get fuel injection, 200hp, and genuine cross-country performance at an accessible entry price. It sells faster than the C because more buyers recognise the value.

**The classic choice, maximum support:** M20J. The most-transacted Mooney in our database, best-supported by shops, largest owner community, and the Lycoming IO-360 is one of the most reliable GA engines built. Pay the $125k median and sleep at night.

**High-altitude efficiency, no turbo anxiety:** M20R Ovation. The IO-550 is a bigger engine than the J needs, which means it runs comfortably at modest power settings. You're spending $274k, but you're getting a modern, comfortable, fast aircraft that holds its value.

**Want the turbo performance:** M20K 252 — not the 231. The 252 is the aircraft the 231 was trying to be. Buy accordingly.

**Tight budget, patient buyer:** M20C. Slow relative to the family, but it's a real Mooney. Inspect carefully, avoid wooden structures, budget for tank seals.
