Overview

The Cessna 172S Maneuver Guide serves as a reference for pilots operating the Cessna 172S aircraft. It outlines various flight maneuvers, including takeoffs, landings, and stalls, providing detailed procedures and performance standards for both private and commercial pilots. The guide emphasizes the importance of checklist usage and proper flight instruction, ensuring that pilots adhere to safety protocols while flying. It includes specific airspeeds, configurations, and callouts for different maneuvers, making it a practical tool for training and proficiency.

  • Rotate at 55 KIAS for takeoff.
  • Pitch for Vy at 74 KIAS during climb.
  • Maintain 90 KIAS on downwind during landing.
  • Use 65 KIAS with 30° flaps on final approach.
  • Perform a Pre-Maneuver Checklist before stalls.

Normal Takeoff

The Normal Takeoff section details the steps for a standard takeoff in the Cessna 172S. Pilots should complete the Takeoff Checklist, perform radio communications, line up on the runway, and apply full power while managing right rudder as needed. The aircraft should be rotated at 55 KIAS and pitched for Vy at 74 KIAS, maintaining approximately a 10° pitch. A Climb/Cruise checklist should be performed when appropriate.

Normal Landing

In the Normal Landing section, pilots are instructed to complete a Descent Checklist prior to entering the pattern and a Before Landing Checklist before landing. The recommended airspeeds during the approach are 90 KIAS on downwind, 85 KIAS with 10° flaps at the abeam touchdown point, 75 KIAS with 20° flaps on base, and 65 KIAS with 30° flaps on final approach. Pilots should close the throttle before touchdown and maintain a positive pitch attitude.

Short Field Takeoff

The Short Field Takeoff section outlines the procedure for taking off from a short runway. Pilots should set flaps to 10°, complete the Takeoff Checklist, and line up on the runway. After applying full power and releasing brakes, the aircraft should lift off at 51 KIAS and pitch for 56 KIAS until clearing a 50-foot obstacle, then pitch for Vy at 74 KIAS.

Soft Field Landing

The Soft Field Landing section provides guidance for landing on soft surfaces. Pilots should complete an Approach Checklist and a Before Landing Checklist. The recommended airspeeds are 90 KIAS on downwind, 85 KIAS with 10° flaps at the abeam point, 75 KIAS with 20° flaps on base, and 65 KIAS with 30° flaps on final. The goal is to achieve a soft touchdown by maintaining back pressure until off the soft surface.

Stalls and Slow Flight

This section covers various stall maneuvers and slow flight procedures. Pilots should perform a Pre-Maneuver Checklist before entering slow flight, reducing throttle to 1700 RPM and incrementally adding flaps. For power-off stalls, the procedure involves reducing throttle to idle and increasing pitch to maintain altitude until stall indications occur.

Safety notes

  • Always use checklists for safety and compliance.
  • Maintain awareness of airspeeds during all phases of flight.
  • Avoid tail strikes during soft field takeoffs and landings.
