HINGING THE AILERON Note : he control surfaces, including the ailer- ons, elevators, and rudder, are prehinged with hinges installed, but the hinges are not glued in place. It is imperative that you properly adhere the hinges in place per the steps that follow us- ing a high-quality thin C/A glue. Carefully remove the aileron from one of the wing panels. Note the position of the hinges. 1. Cessna L-19A Bird Dog “Old Dog, New Tricks” 35-40cc - 98” wingspan Instruction Manual. 6 Remove each hinge from the wing panel and aileron and place a T-pin in the center of each hinge. Slide each hinge into the wing panel until the T-pin is snug against the wing panel. his will help ensure an equal amount of hinge is on either side of the hinge line when the aileron is mounted to the aileron. Slide the wing panel on the aileron until there is only a slight gap. he hinge is now centered on the wing panel and aileron. Remove the T-pins and snug the aileron against the wing panel. A gap of 1/64” or less should be maintained between the wing panel and aileron. NOTE : he hinge is constructed of a spe- cial material that allows the C/A to wick or penetrate and distribute throughout the hinge, securely bonding it to the wood structure of the wing panel and aileron. Delect the aileron and completely satu- rate each hinge with thin C/A glue. he ailerons front surface should lightly con- tact the wing during this procedure. Ide- ally, when the hinges are glued in place, a 1/64” gap or less will be maintained throughout the lengh of the aileron to the wing panel hinge line. Epoxy 2. 3. T-pin Turn the wing panel over and delect the aileron in the opposite direction from the opposite side. Apply thin C/A glue to each hinge, making sure that the C/A penetrates into both the aileron and wing panel. Using C/A remover/debonder and a paper towel, remove any excess C/A glue that may have accumulated on the wing or in the aileron hinge area. Repeat this process with the other wing panel, securely hinging the aileron in place. Ater both ailerons are securely hinged, irmly grasp the wing panel and aileron to make sure the hinges are securely glued and cannot be pulled out. Do this by care- fully applying medium pressure, trying to separate the aileron from the wing panel. Use caution not to crush the wing struc- ture. 5. 4. Use dental loss or heatshrunk tube to secure the connection so they cannot be- come unplugged. INSTALLING THE AILERON SERVOS 3. 4. 1. 2. Apply 2-3 drops of thin C/A to each of the mounting holes. Allow the C/A to cure without using accelerator. Mininum servo spec. Torque : 110 oz-in (7.9 kg-cm) @ 4.8V; 131 oz-in (9.4 kg-cm) @ 6.0V Ailerons servo Flap servo C/A glue Secure the servo to the aileron hatch us- ing Phillips screwdriver and the screws provided with the servo. Apply 1-2 drops of thin C/A to each of the mounting tabs. Allow the C/A to cure without using accelerator. C/A glue 5. 6. 9 Remove the string from the wing at the servo location and use the tape to attach it to the servo extension lead. Pull the lead through the wing and remove the string. 7. 8. 9. INSTALLING THE FLAP PUSHROD Attach the lap servo to the lap servo cover. Center the lap servo (or set the values to 0 for both up and down) and in- stall the servo arm perpendicular to the servo centerline. he clevis will attach to the arm 13/16 inches (21mm) from the center of the arm. 5. 6. 7. Attach the lap linkage to the control horn. Slide the clevis retainer over the forks of the clevis. Route the servo lead for the lap servo out at the root of the wing. Connect the lap servo to the radio system. With the radio system on, place the lap servo into position. Attach the clevis to the lap servo arm. 11 8. Once adjusted, make sure all clevis re- tainers are in position. Apply a drop of threadlock near the clevis, then tighten the nut against the clevis to keep the link- age from changing length inside the wing. 3x10mm 9. Install plastic ribs. 10. 11. 12. Because the size of servos difer, you may need to adjust the size of the precut opening in the mount. he notch in the sides of the mount allow the servo lead to pass through. 1) Install the rubber grommets and brass collets into all servos. M6x45mm INSTALLING THE STOPPER ASSEMBLY Using a modeling knife, carefully cut of the rear portion of one of the 3 nylon tubes leaving 1/2” protruding from the rear of the stopper. his will be the fuel pick up tube. Using a modeling knife, cut one length of silicone fuel line. Connect one end of the line to the weighted fuel pick up and the other end to the nylon pick up tube. Carefully bend the second nylon tube up at a 45º angle. his tube is the vent tube. Test it the stopper assembly into the tank. It may be necessary to remove some of the lashing around the tank opening using a modeling knife. If lashing is present, make sure none falls into the tank. 1. With the stopper assembly in place, the weighted pick-up should rest away from the rear of the tank and move freely inside the tank. he top of the vent tube should rest just below the top of the tank. It should not touch the top of the tank. When satisied with the alignment of the stopper assembly tighten the 3 x 20mm ma- chine screw until the rubber stopper expands and seals the tank opening. Do not over- tighten the assembly as this could cause the tank to split. FUEL TANK INSTALLATION 1. You should mark which tube is the vent and which is the fuel pickup when you attach fuel tubing to the tubes in the stopper. Once the tank is installed inside the fuselage, it may be diicult to determine which is which. 2. 19 3. 6. 5. 4. 7. MOUNTING THE ENGINE 1. 8. Please see below pictures. M5x100mm 2. Reinstall the servo horn by sliding the connector over the pushrod wire. Center the throttle stick and trim and install the servo horn perpendicular to the servo center line. 8. Move the throttle stick to the closed po- sition and move the carburetor to closed. Use a 2.5mm hex wrench to tighten the screw that secures the throttle pushrod wire. Make sure to use threadlock on the screw so it does not vibrate loose. COWLING 1. Please see Images below: 21 2. 3. Tape the cowl to the fuselage using low-tack tape. Use a drill and drill bit to drill the holes for the cowl mounting screws. Make sure the cowl position is correct before drill- ing each hole. 4. 5. 6 . 2mm Because of the size of the cowl, it may be nec- essary to use a needle valve extension for the high speed needle valve. Make this out of suf- icient length 1.5mm wire and install it into the end of the needle valve. Secure the wire in place by tightening the set screw in the side of the needle valve. 7 . ELECTRIC POWER CONVERSION Locate the items neccessary to install the electric power conversion included with your model. 1. Recommended electric power system set-up for use with the included electric power conversion kit. 2. - Motor: 160 - 2700 Watts - Propeller: 18x8 ~ 20x10 - ESC: 70A - 100A - 9-10S Lipo Attach the electric motor box to the ire- wall centered with the cross lines drawn on the electric motor box and irewall. Using M5x30mm to secure the motor box to the irewall. Please see pictures below. Attach the motor mount to the front of the electric motor box using four 5mm blind nut, four M5x25mm hex head bolts to secure the motor. Please refer to images below. 23 3. M5x30mm and washers 4. 5. hen, use 7mm drill bit to enlarge the holes on the electric motor box. 7. 6. 7mm Blind nut 8. 9. M5x25mm Epoxy Attach the speed control to the side of the motor box using two-sided tape and tie wraps. Connect the appropriate leads from the speed control to the mo- tor. INSTALLING THE SPINNER Install the spinner backplate, propeller and spinner cone. 1. he propeller should not touch any part of the spinner cone. If it does, care- fully trim spinner cone opening until pro- peller no longer comes in contact with it. Battery 25 2. C/A glue INSTALLING THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER Using a ruler and a pen, locate the cen- terline of the horizontal stabilizer, at the trailing edge, and place a mark. Use a tri- angle and extend this mark, from back to front, across the top of the stabilizer. Also extend this mark down the back of the trailing edge of the stabilizer. 1. Using a modeling knife, carefully remove the covering at mounting slot of horizon- tal stabilizer ( both side of fuselage). 2. With the stabilizer held irmly in place, use a pen and draw lines onto the stabilizer where it and the fuselage sides meet. Do this on both the right and let sides and top and bottom of the stabilizer. Slide the stabilizer into place in the precut slot in the rear of the fuselage. he stabilizer should be pushed irmly against the front of the slot. 3. 27 Remove the stabilizer. Using the lines you just drew as a guide, carefully remove the covering from between them using a mod- eling knife. Trim and Cut 5. 4. Pen When cutting through the covering to remove it, cut with only enough pressure to only cut through the covering itself. Cutting into the balsa structure may weaken it. Using a modeling knife, carefully remove the covering that overlaps the stabilizer mounting platform sides in the fuselage. Re- move the covering from both the top and the bottom of the platform sides. 6. When you are sure that everything is aligned correctly, mix up a generous amount of 30 Minute Epoxy. Apply a thin layer to the top and bottom of the stabilizer mounting area and to the stabilizer mounting platform sides in the fuselage. Slide the stabilizer in place and realign. Double check all of your meas- urements once more before the epoxy cures. Hold the stabilizer in place with T-pins or masking tape and remove any excess epoxy using a paper towel and rubbing alcohol. Fill Epoxy 7. HINGING THE RUDDER Glue the top two rudder hinges in place using the same techniques used to hinge the ailerons. he lower hinge will be glued when the i/rudder assembly is attached to the fu- selage. 8. C/A glue 18mm 29 INSTALLING VERTICAL STABILIZER Using a modeling knife, remove the cov- ering from over the precut hinge slot cut into the lower rear portion of the fuselage. hs slot accepts the lower rudder hinge. Slide the vertical stabilizer into the slot in the top of the fuselage. he rear edge of the stabilizer should be lsh with the rear edge of the fuselage and the lower rudder hinge should engage the precut hinge slot in the lower fuselage. he bottom edge of the stabilizer should also be imly pushed against the top of the horizontal stabilizer. 1. 2. While holding the vertical stabilizer im- ly in place, use a pen and draw a line on eachside of the vertical stabilizer where it meets the top of the fuselage. Slide the vertical stabilizer back inplace. Using a triangle, check to ensure that the vertical stabilizer is aligned 90º to the horizontal stabilizer. 90º Vertical Stabilizer. Horizontal Stabilizer. Hinge Install the elevator control horn using the same method as with the aileron con- trol horns. Position the elevator control horn on the both side of elevator. ELEVATOR PUSHROD HORN INSTALLATION Elevator control horn 1. Fuel tubing hread one clevis and M2 lock nut on to each elevator control rod. hread the horns on until they are lush with the ends of the control rods. M2 clevis M2 lock nut Elevator pushrod When you are sure that everything is aligned correctly, mix up a generous amount of Flash 30 Minute Epoxy. Ap- ply a thin layer to the mounting slot and to bottom of the vertical stabilizer mounting area. Apply epoxy to the bot- tom and top edges of the iller block and to the lower hinge also. Set the stabilizer in place and realign. Double check all of your measurements once more before the epoxy cures. Hold the stabilizer in place with T-pins or masking tape and remove any excess epoxy using a paper towel and rubbing alcohol. Allow the epoxy to fully cure before proceeding. 31 RUDDER PUSHROD INSTALLATION Repeat steps as same as steps done for elevator. 6. 1. 2. Nylon snap keeper 5. 3. 4. If all the decals are not precut, please use scissors or a sharp hobby knife to cut the decals from the sheet. Please be certain the model is clean and free from oily in- gerprints and dust. Position decal on the model where desired, using the photos on the box and aid in their location. APPLY THE DECALS BALANCING If all the decals are precut and ready to stick. Please be certain the model is clean and free from oily ingerprints and dust. Position decal on the model where de- sired, using the photos on the box and aid in their location. With the wings attached to the fuselage, all parts of the model installed ( ready to ly), and empty fuel tanks, hold the mod- el at the marked balance point with the stabilizer level. *If possible, irst attempt to balance the model by changing the position of the receiver battery and receiver. If you are unable to obtain good balance by doing so, then it will be necessary to add weight to the nose or tail to achieve the proper balance point. Lit the model. If the tail drops when you lit, the model is “tail heavy” and you must add weight* to the nose.
