MOONEY M20J 205 · Pilot's Operating Handbook
Overview
The Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) for the Mooney M20J 205 provides essential pre-flight and in-flight operating procedures for the S-TEC System Sixty Two Autopilot. It includes detailed sections on the autopilot's modes of operation, control theory, and necessary pre-flight tests.
- The POH must be carried in the aircraft and available to the pilot at all times.
- The autopilot assists with cockpit workload management.
- Understanding the autopilot's operating procedures is crucial for effective use.
- The autopilot has various modes including Heading, Navigation, and Altitude Hold.
- Pre-flight tests are required before takeoff.
- The autopilot is rate-based and controls both roll and pitch axes.
- The yaw damper is optional and helps with adverse yaw.
- The document includes a glossary for terminology.

Document Organization
The document is organized into sections covering overview, pre-flight procedures, in-flight procedures, operating parameters, and a glossary.
Purpose
The POH provides operating procedures for the S-TEC System Sixty Two Autopilot and must be used alongside the FAA-approved Aircraft Flight Manual.
General Control Theory
The autopilot uses sensed data to control the aircraft's roll and pitch axes, with servos coupled to the ailerons and elevator.
Modes of Operation
The autopilot features multiple modes for roll and pitch control, including Heading, Navigation, Altitude Hold, and Vertical Speed.
Pre-Flight Procedures
Pre-flight tests must be performed with the engine running to verify the autopilot's responses.
Operating Parameters
Details on roll and pitch axis limits are provided, ensuring safe operation of the autopilot.
Safety notes
- The POH must be used in conjunction with the FAA-approved Aircraft Flight Manual.
- Pilots should develop a thorough understanding of the autopilot before using it under IFR.
- Activation of roll axis control must precede activation of pitch axis control.
