Introduction

The bulletin outlines the need for a software upgrade to the GARMIN G1000/GFC700 systems for Mooney aircraft equipped with earlier software versions. It highlights the requirement for this upgrade to enable the installation of optional features such as the Synthetic Vision System.

Instructions for Software Upgrade

The document provides detailed instructions for extracting and uploading the new software version. It emphasizes the importance of using SanDisk or Toshiba SD cards and ensuring that the aircraft is connected to a ground power unit during the upload process.

Pilot’s Checklist

The bulletin includes instructions for updating the pilot's checklist file on the SD card to ensure compatibility with the new software version. The checklist must be renamed according to the specific Mooney model to be recognized by the G1000 system.

Post Maintenance Check Flight

After the software installation, a post-maintenance check flight is required to verify the proper operation of the aircraft systems, including the Manual Electric Trim system.

Warranty and References

The bulletin states that warranty information is not applicable and provides references to the Garmin G1000 Cockpit Reference Guide and the G1000 System Maintenance Manual for further details.

Safety notes

  • Ensure all power connections are secure during software loading to prevent loss of power.

AFFECTED: TIME OF At Owners Discretion COMPLIANCE: INTRODUCTION: Aircraft will require new software load to be completed by a Mooney Authorized Service Center or a GARMIN Authorized Service Center who can access and load the new software revision required to comply with this Service Bulletin. The new software revision will allow the Aircraft to be eligible for the “Optional” Synthetic Vision System to be installed (Unlock Card purchased sep- arately), contact your Mooney Authorized Service Center for details. On software revision 0401-23 and prior, note that the system ID may change as part of the soft- ware upgrade process. Contact Garmin customer support for replacement database or unlock cards if they become inoperative as a result of a system ID change. For prior to 0401-26 software, the pilot’s A/C Checklist (if used) will need to be renamed as a result of the new 0401-30 software upgrade. The new software upgrade will only recognize the checklist file name as to each identified Mooney model (M20M, M20R_Ovation2GX, M20TN, M20R_Ovation3). This checklist gives the pilot basic information as contained the “Normal Pro- cedures” section of the AFM/POH. INSTRUCTIONS: Read entire procedures before beginning work. Identify all optional equipment before installing the software upload. Refer to the Aircraft Flight Manual Section IX - Optional Equipment Supplements (WX500, Fuel Capacity, Transducers, etc.). If the identity is unknown of the trans- ducers installed in the Aircraft, remove top cowl and locate the transducers mounted in the engine compartment on the LH upper engine mount (see Figure SB-307-1). Verify if any optional “Unlock Cards” have been previously installed (JEPP Charts, TAWS, SVS), these will need to be re-installed after the software 0401-30 upgrade. 1.1 - EXTRACT GARMIN 0401-30 SOFTWARE FILE: NOTE: The Service Center performing the work must extract the new software version (006-B0401-30) from the “GARMIN Dealer Website” or Mooney “WebPortal” to a compatible SD Loader Card and compat- ible SD Card Reader (SD Plus memory card reader or compatible) for Software Installation load. NOTE: Garmin recommends the use of SanDisk or Toshiba SD cards to load G1000 software and configura- tion files. If software loading problems occur when using another brand of card, replace the card with a SanDisk or Toshiba card and try the upload procedure again. 1. Download of new GARMIN configuration software (Version 006-B0401-30) will be required. Re- fer to S1.0 Software Download Instructions attached in this procedure. 1.2 VERIFY SYSTEM ID NUMBER (Before and After software upload) 1. Before software upload, note the SYSTEM ID number located on the last page of the Auxiliary page group (see Figure SB-307-2). On software revisions 0401-23 and prior, the customer (or dealer) may need to contact Garmin customer support for replacement database or unlock cards if they become inoperative as a result of a system ID change. MOONEY AIRPLANE COMPANY, INC. 165 Al Mooney Road, Kerrville, Texas 78028 tel: 830-896-6000 www.mooney.com Page 2 of 10 1.3 G1000 SOFTWARE AND CONFIGURATION UPLOAD NOTE: Garmin recommends the use of SanDisk or Toshiba SD cards to load G1000 software and configura- tion files. If software loading problems occur when using another brand of card, replace the card with a SanDisk or Toshiba card and try the upload procedure again. NOTE: Do not remove power from the G1000 during software loading. Do not rely solely on the aircraft bat- teries to prevent loss of power during the software loading process, connect a ground power unit to the aircraft, be sure that BATT 1 is selected. All GDU’s should be in the same mode (configuration or normal), unless instructed differently by the procedure. Remove power only when instructed by the procedure. S Perform these preliminary steps before up-loading software: S Remove supplemental data cards from the lower slot of the GDU’s before loading any software. Supplemental data cards left inserted can become corrupt making them unusable. Replacing corrupt cards is not covered under warranty. NOTE: Loading the wrong software into GIA units may cause an inoperable condition that is not covered by warranty. Identify which type of GIA (WAAS or non-WAAS) LRU is installed in the aircraft, and then choose the correct WAAS or non-WAAS software file before loading GIA software. Loading the incorrect software may necessitate returning the unit to Garmin for a non-warranty repair. The sys- tem may not provide a warning if the incorrect software is selected. 1. Connect a ground power unit to the external power receptacle, and turn on the ground power unit. a.) System Power Up - Apply power to the G1000 by doing the following: (make sure BATT 1 se- lected on Aircraft. Turn on the MASTER switch. Turn on the A/P POWER switch. b.)
