Cockpit Checks
Before starting the engine, pilots should ensure that the intercom is connected, headsets are plugged in, fuel is on, magnetos are off, and the primer is closed and locked. Additionally, checks should be made on the rudder pedals, hydraulic brake reservoirs, control stick cable attachments, and overhead aileron cable linkages.
Engine & Nose Checks
Pilots must verify that the oil level is between 3-4 quarts, check fuel levels, and ensure that the cowling pins and exhaust pipe are secure. It is also important to drain the gascolator and inspect the propeller for cracks.
Before Engine Start
Prior to starting the engine, ensure that the wheels are chocked, magnetos are off, fuel is on, carb heat is off, and the primer is pumped twice. The propeller should be pulled through four blades to ensure it is free.
Take-Off Procedures
During take-off, pilots should apply full power, check RPM, and climb at a speed of 55 mph. The cruise RPM should be set to 2150.
Landing Procedures
For landing, ensure fuel is on, the primer is locked, and carb heat is on. The approach speed should be between 50-60 mph.
Safety notes
- Ensure all checks are completed before engine start to prevent accidents.
- Monitor oil pressure within 30 seconds of engine start to ensure proper operation.
