Purpose
The purpose of this Service Bulletin is to address the potential risk of certain Dayton-Granger Static Dischargers (P/N 456-904) becoming loose and detaching from the aircraft during flight. This issue affects specific aircraft models listed in the bulletin.
Compliance Time
Compliance with this Service Bulletin is mandatory and should be performed at the next regularly scheduled maintenance event, but not to exceed fifty (50) flight hours.
Inspection Instructions
For airplanes listed in Group 1, proceed directly to Step 3 of the inspection. For Group 2, review maintenance records to check if any Static Discharger (P/N 456-904) has been installed since October 2010. If installed, proceed to Step 3; if not, proceed to Part III.
Removal and Installation
The removal process involves unscrewing the static discharger from its mounting base. When installing, ensure that a second lock washer is present and torque the hex nut to 5 in.-lb. Verify the electrical resistance between the discharger tip and the aircraft surface is between 6.0 to 200 mega-ohms.
Documentation
After completing the inspection and any necessary actions, make a logbook entry indicating compliance with this Service Bulletin.

ATA: 2360 (OVER) SERVICE NO. 1237 BULLETIN PIPER CONSIDERS COMPLIANCE MANDATORY Piper Aircraft, Inc. 2926 Piper Drive Vero Beach, Florida, U.S.A. 32960 Date: August 10, 2011 (S) SUBJECT: STATIC DISCHARGER REPLACEMENT MODELS AFFECTED: SERIAL NUMBERS AFFECTED: (Group 1) PA-46-350P Mirage 4636491 through 4636499 PA-46R-350T Matrix 4692158 through 4692163 PA-46-500TP Meridian 4697448 through 4697455 (Group 2) PA-46-310P Malibu 46-8408001 through 4608140 PA-46-350P Mirage 4622001 through 4622200; 4636001 through 4636490 PA-46R-350T Matrix 4692001 through 4692157 PA-46-500TP Meridian 4697001 through 4697447 COMPLIANCE TIME: At the next regularly scheduled maintenance event, but not to exceed fi fty (50) hours. APPROVAL: The technical content of this Service Letter has been shown to comply with the applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and is FAA approved. PURPOSE: Certain shipments of Dayton-Granger Static Dischargers, Piper part number (P/N) 456-904, may become loose and separate from the aircraft during fl ight. Piper installed these Static Dischargers on the airplanes listed in Group 1. Airplanes listed in Group 2 may have installed them as service replacements, October 2010 to present. INSTRUCTIONS: Part I. Inspection 1. For airplanes listed in Group 1, proceed to Step 3. 2. For airplanes listed in Group 2, review airplane maintenance records to determine if any Static Discharger, P/N 456-904 has been installed, October 2010 or later. a. If so, proceed to Step 3. b. If not, proceed to Part III. 3. Inspect each Static Discharger, P/N 456-904, for proper installation. The correct installation includes one lock washer on each side of the hex nut as shown in Figure 1. a. If both lock washers are present, proceed to Part III. b. If only one lock washer is present, or the discharger is missing entirely, proceed to Part II. Figure 1 Correctly Installed Static Discharger SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 1237 PAGE 2 of 3 Part II. Removal and Installation 1. Removal Unscrew static discharger from mounting base. NOTE: Retain to return for warranty credit. 2. Installation a. Verify second lock washer is installed on static discharger per Figure 1. b. Install new static discharger into the mounting base. c. Tighten hex nut to mounting base. Torque to 5 in.-lb. d. Verify electrical resistance between static discharger tip and aircraft surface is 6.0 to 200 mega-ohms (using 500 to 1,000 volt mega-ohmmeter). Part Ill. Documentation Make a logbook entry indicating compliance with this Service Letter.
