Applicability
The directive applies to Piper PA-24 models, specifically PA-24, PA-24-250, and PA-24-260, with the exception of PA-24-260 aircraft with serial numbers 24-4783, 24-4804, and subsequent.
Requirement
Operators are required to inspect the engine exhaust muffler and shroud assembly, carburettor heat shroud, support braces, clamps, brackets, exhaust stacks, and manifolds according to USA AD 68-05-01. This inspection is repetitive and must be conducted at each scheduled maintenance release inspection.

The compliance for the inspection is set to occur at each scheduled inspection for the issuance of a maintenance release following the effective date of this amendment, which is 20 November 2008.
Background
The original AD was issued in 1963 and has undergone several amendments. The current amendment specifies compliance with USA AD 68-05-01 and allows for the discontinuation of repetitive inspections under certain conditions.

COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE On the effective date specified below, and for the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below revokes Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/PA-24/14 Amdt 1 and issues the following AD under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section. Piper PA-24 (Comanche) Series Aeroplanes AD/PA-24/14 Amdt 2 Exhaust System - Inspection 12/2008 Applicability: Models PA-24, PA-24-250 and PA-24-260 except PA-24-260 with serial numbers 24-4783, 24-4804 and subsequent. Requirement: Inspect the engine exhaust muffler and shroud assembly (including the internal baffle tube and tail pipe), carburettor heat shroud and air duct, support braces, clamps and brackets, exhaust stacks and manifolds in accordance with USA AD 68-05-01. This repetitive inspection may be discontinued when: • For PA-24 aircraft, hollow muffler P/N 24506 or P/N 26385 is installed. • For PA-24-250 aircraft, hollow muffler P/N 24506 or P/N 26385 is installed in combination with muffler support Kit No. 756775 or Kit No. 757058. • For PA-24-260 aircraft, a barrier device is installed in each muffler in accordance with Piper Service Letter No. 518. Note: Piper Service Letters 324B, 324C, 412A, 481 and 518 are relevant. Compliance: At each scheduled inspection for issue of a maintenance release following the date of effectivity of this Amendment. This Amendment becomes effective on 20 November 2008. Background: The original issue of this AD in 1963 specified compliance with Piper Service Letter No. 324B which covered models PA-24 and PA-24-250. Amendment 1 in 1969 specified compliance with Piper Service Letter No. 324C which also covered models PA-24-260 and PA-24-400.
