Before Starting Engine

This section outlines the necessary steps to prepare the aircraft for engine start. Key actions include completing a passenger briefing, verifying weight and balance limits, adjusting and locking seats, fastening seatbelts, and ensuring the parking brake is engaged. The mixture should be set to rich, and the throttle opened ¼ inch before turning on the battery and fuel pump.

Engine Start Procedures

The checklist provides detailed procedures for starting the engine under normal, cold, hot, and flooded conditions. For normal starts, the propeller area must be clear, and the ignition switch turned to start. Oil pressure should be checked within 30 seconds of starting. For hot starts, the throttle is opened ½ inch, and for flooded starts, the throttle is fully open.

Before Taxi

Before taxiing, the avionics master should be turned on, and the transponder set. The mixture should be leaned out for taxi, and the landing light turned on. The parking brake must be released, and brakes and steering checked.

Before Takeoff

This section includes critical checks before the first takeoff, such as verifying the master switch is on, checking flight instruments, and ensuring the fuel selector is set to the fullest tank. Flaps should be set appropriately, and the takeoff briefing completed.

After Landing

Post-landing procedures include setting the trim to neutral, retracting flaps, leaning the mixture, and turning off the fuel pump. The strobe lights and transponder code should be adjusted as required.

Safety notes

  • Ensure oil pressure is checked within 30 seconds of engine start.
  • Starter manufacturers recommend limiting cranking periods to 30 seconds with a 2-minute rest between periods.
