Overview

This document provides emergency procedures specifically for the Piper PA-28-181 Archer III. It is intended for pilots and crew members to reference during emergency situations. The procedures outlined cover various scenarios such as engine fires, power loss during takeoff and in flight, electrical failures, and other critical situations. Each procedure includes specific actions to take, airspeeds to maintain, and safety measures to ensure the safety of the aircraft and its occupants. The document emphasizes the importance of maintaining aircraft control and preparing for emergency landings when necessary.

  • Maintain safe airspeed of 76 KIAS during engine power loss in takeoff.
  • In case of engine fire during start, turn off fuel selector and evacuate immediately.
  • For power loss in flight, switch fuel tanks and prepare for a power-off landing if power is not restored.
  • Verify emergency battery switch is armed during electrical fire and land as soon as possible.
  • Adjust mixture for smoothness if engine roughness occurs, and prepare for landing if necessary.

Engine Fire During Start

In the event of an engine fire during start, the procedure is to continue cranking the starter, set the mixture to full lean/cutoff, open the throttle, and turn off the fuel pump and fuel selector. The master switch and magnetos should also be turned off, followed by evacuation and use of a fire extinguisher.

Engine Power Loss During Takeoff

If there is a power loss during takeoff and it cannot be aborted, pilots should maintain a safe airspeed of 76 KIAS, turn off the fuel selector and mixture, and prepare for landing by unlatched the door to protect the body.

Power Loss in Flight

In case of power loss in flight with sufficient altitude, pilots should trim for best glide speed at 76 KIAS, switch fuel tanks, turn on the fuel pump, and set the mixture to full rich. If power is not restored, prepare for a power-off landing.

Electrical Fire in Flight

For an electrical fire in flight, verify that the emergency battery switch is armed, turn off the master, alternator, cabin heat, and defroster, and open the vents. Land as soon as possible.

Engine Roughness

If engine roughness occurs, turn on the alternate air. If roughness persists after one minute, adjust the mixture for smoothness, switch fuel tanks, and check engine gauges. Prepare for a power-off landing if necessary.

Safety notes

  • Improper leaning procedures will greatly reduce endurance.
  • Below 5,000’ MSL, only lean mixture if certain power is ≤ 75% (RPM ≤ 2,500).
  • Best economy is achieved by peaking EGT or engine roughness; best power is 100°F richer.
