Engine Fire During Start
In the event of an engine fire during start, the pilot should crank the engine, set the mixture to idle cut-off, open the throttle, turn off the electric fuel pump, and switch the fuel selector off. If the fire continues, the pilot should abandon the aircraft.
Engine Power Loss During Takeoff
If there is a power loss during takeoff and sufficient runway remains, the pilot should land straight ahead. If insufficient runway is available, maintain safe airspeed and avoid obstructions with only shallow turns. If altitude permits, attempt to restart the engine by switching the fuel selector to the tank with fuel, ensuring the electric fuel pump is on, and checking the mixture and carburetor heat.
Power Off Landing
For a power-off landing, locate a suitable airfield and establish a spiral pattern. At 1000 feet above the airfield, slow to 63 KIAS for the shortest landing. When committed to landing, the pilot should turn off the ignition, master switch, fuel selector, and set the mixture to idle cut-off, while ensuring seat belts and harnesses are tight.
Electrical Failures
In case of electrical failures, if the ALT annunciator light is illuminated, check the ammeter. If it shows zero, turn off the ALT switch and reduce electrical loads. If power is not restored, land as soon as practical. For electrical overload, turn on the ALT switch and off the battery switch, reducing electrical loads.
Spin Recovery
To recover from a spin, the pilot should reduce throttle to idle, keep ailerons neutral, apply full opposite rudder to the direction of rotation, and push the control wheel fully forward. Once rotation stops, neutralize the rudder and adjust the control wheel to regain level flight.
Safety notes
- Abandon the aircraft if an engine fire continues during start.
- Prepare for power-off landing if engine power is not restored in flight.
- Use full carburetor heat to prevent icing.
