Overview

This document is a checklist for the Piper PA-28 Dakota II, specifically tailored for pilots operating the aircraft. It provides a comprehensive series of checks to be performed before and after engine start, during taxi, takeoff, and landing. The checklist is designed to ensure that all necessary safety and operational procedures are followed, enhancing the safety and efficiency of flight operations. It includes specific operational parameters, such as fuel management, engine performance checks, and preflight inspections, making it a vital tool for pilots to reference during their flight preparations and operations.

  • Max Takeoff Mass: 3000 lbs (1361 kg)
  • Fuel Capacity: 72 USG usable, 36 USG per wing tank
  • Oil Capacity: Max 12 Qts, Min 6 Qts (1 Qt = 0.95 L)
  • Cruise Power Setting: 65% at 2300 RPM
  • Max RPM Drop during Magneto Check: 175 RPM, Max Difference: 50 RPM

Preflight Check (Inside)

The preflight check inside includes critical steps such as turning the master switch ON, checking fuel endurance, setting the parking brake, and ensuring the mixture is at idle cut-off. Flaps should be set to full down, and pitot and static drains should be pushed to drain.

Preflight Check (Outside)

The outside preflight check involves inspecting the general condition of the aircraft, ensuring fuel caps are closed, and checking oil levels (maximum 12 quarts, minimum 6 quarts). It also includes checking the pitot heater and stall warning systems.

Engine Start

During engine start, the propeller area must be checked, and the primer should be injected 4-5 times (2 times if hot) before locking it. The starter should be engaged until the engine starts, with a maximum engagement time of 30 seconds. Oil pressure must be checked to be within the green range within 30 seconds.

Check Before Taxi

Before taxiing, flight controls must be free, and the propeller should be set to high RPM. Fuel quantity and mixture settings must be verified, and the autopilot and trims should be checked and set to takeoff position.

Cruise Check

In cruise, power should be set to 65% at 2300 RPM, with specific manifold pressures and true airspeeds noted for different altitudes. Fuel management and engine instruments must be monitored to ensure they remain in the green range.

Safety notes

  • Ensure all checks are completed before engine start and taxiing.
  • Monitor fuel pressure and engine instruments during flight.
