Cabin Preflight
The cabin preflight checklist includes verifying that the Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) and other documents are in the copilot seatback, ensuring the magneto switch is OFF, and checking the engine temperatures (CHT/Oil Temp) are at least 40°F. Fuel gauges should be verified for accuracy, and the operation of the pitot heat and light switches should be confirmed.
Engine Start Procedures
Before starting the engine, the throttle should be set to 1/2 inch hot or 1/4 inch cold. The propeller should be in the full forward position, and the mixture should be set to full rich. After turning on the master and alternator switches, the fuel pump should be activated until fuel pressure is stable. The engine is started by turning the magneto switch to START, and the throttle should be adjusted to maintain 1000-1200 RPM after starting.
Takeoff Procedures
During takeoff, ensure all doors are closed and latched, and all exterior lights are ON. The throttle should be set to full open, and the engine instruments must be verified to be in the green. For normal takeoff, the rotation speed is between 60-65 KIAS. For short field takeoff, flaps should be set to 25 degrees, and the rotation speed is 50-60 KIAS.
Emergency Procedures
In the event of an engine failure during takeoff, the throttle should be set to idle, and brakes applied as necessary. If there is insufficient runway remaining, the mixture should be set to idle cutoff, and the master switch turned OFF. After takeoff, if an engine failure occurs, maintain airspeed at Vg (85 KIAS) and follow the emergency checklist.
V-Speeds
The V-speeds for the Piper PA-28 Dakota include Vx at 73 KIAS, Vy at 85 KIAS, and Vs at 65 KIAS. The maximum demonstrated crosswind is 17 KIAS, and the approach speed (Vapp) varies based on weight, with 72 KIAS at 3000 lbs.
