Engine Fire During Start

In the event of an engine fire during start, the pilot should crank the engine while keeping the throttle fully open. The mixture should be set to idle cut-off, and the fuel pump should be turned off. The fuel selector should also be switched off, and the door should be secured open to facilitate evacuation if necessary.

Engine Power Loss: Takeoff

If there is a loss of engine power during takeoff, the pilot should switch the fuel selector, turn on the fuel pump, and set the mixture to rich. If a restart is not possible, the pilot should follow the power-off landing procedure.

Engine Power Loss: In-Flight

In the event of engine power loss in-flight, the pilot should land as soon as possible. The best glide speed is 79 KIAS, and the pilot should switch fuel tanks and cycle the magnetos. If a restart is unsuccessful, the power-off landing procedure should be followed.

Loss Of Fuel Pressure

If fuel pressure is lost, the pilot should turn on the fuel pump and check that the fuel selector is on the fullest tank. This procedure is critical to restoring fuel flow to the engine.

Alternator Failure

In case of alternator failure, the pilot should check the ammeter and circuit breaker. If the alternator output is still zero, the alternator switch should be turned off and then back on after one second. Electrical load should be reduced, and landing should be performed as soon as possible.

Safety notes

  • Always secure the door open in case of an engine fire for quick evacuation.
  • Declare an emergency on 121.5 and squawk 7700 if necessary.

ALT light illuminated: Ammeter -- check to verify inoperative Flaps – UP Control Wheel -- as required to smoothly regain level flight attitude 2.) If ammeter shows zero: ALT circuit breaker -- check Open Door ALT switch – OFF (for 1 second), then ON Airspeed -- slow to 87 KIAS 3.)
