Overview

This document outlines emergency procedures specifically for the Piper PA-28R Arrow III, providing pilots with critical actions to take in various emergency situations. It serves as a quick reference guide for handling engine fires, power loss, electrical failures, and other in-flight emergencies. The procedures are designed to ensure the safety of the aircraft and its occupants, emphasizing the importance of maintaining control and preparing for emergency landings when necessary. Pilots should familiarize themselves with these procedures and keep this document accessible during flight operations.

  • Best glide speed is 79 KIAS.
  • Engine fire during start requires immediate action: continue cranking, mixture cutoff, throttle open, and evacuate if necessary.
  • For power loss during takeoff, maintain control and prepare for landing if unable to abort.
  • In case of electrical fire, turn off the master switch and land as soon as possible.
  • Emergency gear extension procedures must be followed if the gear is not down and locked.

Engine Fire During Start

In the event of an engine fire during start, the pilot should continue cranking the starter, set the mixture to full lean or cutoff, open the throttle, turn off the fuel pump and selector, and switch off the master and magnetos. Evacuate the aircraft and use a fire extinguisher if necessary.

Engine Power Loss During Takeoff

If experiencing power loss during takeoff and unable to abort, maintain aircraft control. If on rough terrain, retract the gear, turn off the fuel selector, set the mixture to full lean or cutoff, and adjust flaps as required. Unlatch the door to protect the body during landing.

Power Loss in Flight

For power loss in flight with sufficient altitude, trim to best glide speed of 79 KIAS, select a landing site, switch fuel tanks, turn on the fuel pump, and set the mixture to full rich. Check engine gauges for the cause of loss and prepare for a power-off landing if necessary.

Electrical Fire in Flight

In case of an electrical fire in flight, turn off the master switch and cabin heat, open vents, and land as soon as possible. This procedure is crucial to mitigate risks associated with electrical failures.

Emergency Gear Extension

If the landing gear is not down and locked, check that the master switch is on, ensure the circuit breaker is checked, and lower the landing gear selector. Use the emergency gear lever if necessary, maintaining an airspeed below 87 KIAS.

Safety notes

  • Improper leaning procedures will greatly reduce endurance.
  • Always check the POH for complete emergency procedures.
