Engine Fire During Start
In the event of an engine fire during start, the pilot should crank the engine while setting the mixture to idle cut-off and opening the throttle. The electric fuel pump should be turned off, and the fuel selector should be set to off. If the fire continues, abandon the aircraft.
Engine Power Loss During Flight
If experiencing power loss in flight, the pilot should land straight ahead if sufficient runway remains. If not, the gear selector should be set to up, and the pilot should maintain safe airspeed while avoiding obstructions. If altitude allows, the pilot should switch the fuel selector to the tank containing fuel and check the electric fuel pump and mixture settings.
Power Off Landing
For a power-off landing, trim for 79 KIAS and locate a suitable field. Establish a spiral pattern and aim to be 1,000 feet above the field at the downwind position for a normal landing approach. Slow to 72 KIAS for the shortest landing.
Engine Fire
In case of an engine fire, the fuel selector should be turned off, and the throttle closed. The mixture should be set to idle cut-off, and the electric fuel pump checked off. The pilot should then proceed with the power-off landing procedure.
Electrical Failure
If the ALT annunciator light illuminates, the pilot should check the ammeter. If it shows zero, the ALT switch should be turned off, and electrical loads reduced. If power is not restored, the ALT switch should be turned off, and the pilot should land as soon as practical.
Safety notes
- If the battery master switch is off, the landing gear cannot be retracted.
- If the battery is depleted, the landing gear must be lowered using the emergency extension procedure.
