SERVICE BULLETIN Piper Aircraft Corporation Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. April 10, 1974 S/M (This supersedes and voids Service Bulletin No. 411, dated March 1, 1974) Subject: Stabilator Torque Tube Bearing Block Attachment Fitting Rivet Replacement Reason for Revision: Models Affected: PA-24-180, PA-24-250 and PA-24-260 Comanche PA-24-400 Comanche PA-30 Twin Comanche PA-39 Twin Comanche C/R compliance Time: Purpose: Extension of coverage to include PA-39 Twin Comanche C/R aircraft (see Models Affected and Serial Numbers Affected, below). Serial Numbers Affected: 24-1 to 24-5047 incl. 26-2 to 26-148 incl. 30-1 to 30-2000 incl. 39-1 to 39-155 incl. At the next 100-hour inspection or annual inspection, which- ever occurs first, not to exceed the next 100 hours of operation. Information has been received by the factory describing movement and/or noise in the area where the stabilator assembly joins the fuselage. It has been determined that the above described condition may have been caused by one of the following (refer to attached sketch for a pictorial description of the affected areas): 1. Stabilator torque tube bearings not firmly seated in the stabilator torque tube bearing blocks. 2. The holes in the stabilator torque tube bearing upper and lower fittings may be enlarged. This service release provides information to inspect the above referenced aircraft for stabilator movement and/or noise. nstructions: 1. Grasp the stabilator tip and exert a fore and aft force and then an up and down force. (over) Service Bulletin No. 411A Page 2 of 3 Instructions: (continued) 2. Simultaneously (with Step 1, above), have another person check closely for movement and/or noise in the area described in Purpose, above (the attached sketch illustrates a recommended method of detecting movement in the stabilator torque tube bearing fittings area). 3. If there are no indications of movement and/or noise, no further action is required (other than log book entry). 4. If there is movement and/or noise in the area described in Purpose, above, immediately contact the Customer Services Department, Piper Aircraft Corporation, Lock Haven, Pennsylvania 17745. Material Required: Availability of Parts: Effectivity Date: Not applicable. Not applicable. This Service Bulletin is effective April 20, 1974. Summary: Please contact your Piper Field Service Facility to make arrangements for compliance with this Service Bulletin in accordance with the provisions of Compliance Time, above. A Service Publication Compliance Form is enclosed with each copy of this service release being mailed to affected owners of record; this form is to be filled out according to the instructions on the form reverse side and left with the Piper Field Service Facility performing the modification.
