Engine Fire During Start
In the event of an engine fire during start, the pilot should crank the engine, set the mixture to idle cut-off, open the throttle, turn off the electric fuel pump, and switch the fuel selector off. If the fire continues, the pilot must abandon the aircraft.
Engine Power Loss During Takeoff (Not Airborne)
If there is a power loss during takeoff and there is sufficient runway, the pilot should immediately close the throttle and apply brakes to stop the aircraft straight ahead. If there is insufficient runway, the pilot should follow similar steps but also set the mixture to idle cut-off, turn off the fuel selector, master switch, and magnetos while maintaining directional control.
Power Off Landing
In the case of engine power loss, the pilot should trim to 83 KIAS, locate a suitable airfield, and establish a spiral pattern. At 1000 feet above the airfield, the pilot should extend full flaps for the shortest landing. When committed to landing, the landing gear selector should be set to down, and the mixture should be cut off before touchdown.
Electrical Failures
If the alternator output is lost, the pilot should verify the battery ammeter and reduce electrical loads to a minimum. If the alternator output cannot be restored, the pilot must land as soon as practical, as the battery will be the only source of electrical power.
Spin Recovery
In the event of a spin, the pilot should apply full opposite rudder to the direction of rotation, push the control wheel full forward while neutralizing ailerons, and then idle the throttle. Once the rotation stops, the pilot should neutralize the rudder and regain level flight.
Safety notes
- If normal engine operation and fuel flow is not re-established, turn off the electric fuel pump to prevent fuel leaks.
- If the battery is depleted, the landing gear must be lowered using the emergency extension procedure.

If alternator output cannot be restored, reduce electrical loads and land as soon as practical. The battery is the only remaining source of electrical power. Low Bus Voltage annunciator light will illuminate as battery power is depleted. NOTE: If the BATTERY is depleted the LANDING GEAR must be lowered using the EMERGENCY EXTENSION PROCEDURE. The GEAR position lights and FLAPS will be inoperative.
