Limitations of Operation

This section details operational limitations for the Piper PA-38 Tomahawk, including speeds (KIAS) such as Va 103, Vne 138, and Vno 110. It also specifies fuel capacity (32 U.S. gallons total, 30 usable), maximum take-off weight (1,670 lbs), and engine operational limits including maximum RPM of 2,600 and oil temperature limits.

Engine Power Loss During Takeoff (Not Airborne)

In the event of engine power loss during takeoff, if there is sufficient runway remaining, the pilot should immediately close the throttle and apply brakes as required to stop straight ahead. If there is insufficient runway, the pilot should close the throttle, apply brakes, cut off the mixture, turn off the fuel selector, master switch, and magnetos, while maintaining directional control.

Engine Power Loss During Takeoff (if Airborne)

If the engine loses power after takeoff and there is sufficient altitude, maintain airspeed above stall, close the throttle, and turn off the mixture and fuel selector. If altitude allows, attempt a restart by switching fuel tanks and turning on the electric fuel pump.

Engine Power Loss In Flight

If power loss occurs in flight, switch the fuel selector to another tank, turn on the electric fuel pump, and check engine gauges. If power is not restored, try different throttle and mixture settings, and prepare for a power-off landing.

Fire Engine During Start

In case of an engine fire during start, crack the engine, cut off the mixture, open the throttle, turn off the electric fuel pump, and fuel selector. If the fire continues, abandon the aircraft.

Fire Engine In Flight

If an engine fire occurs in flight, turn off the fuel selector, close the throttle, cut off the mixture, and turn off the electric fuel pump. Prepare for a power-off landing.
