Applicability

The directive applies to specific models of the Piper PA-44 Seminole, including the PA44-180 and PA44-180T. The serial numbers affected range from 44-7995001 through 44-8195026 for the PA44-180 and from 44-8107001 through 44-8207005 for the PA44-180T.

Requirement

Operators are required to incorporate the Nose Landing Gear Modification Kit, identified as Piper Part No. 764-378. This kit includes a close tolerance bolt (NAS464P4-27), four bearings, and other necessary hardware for installation on the drag link assembly.

Compliance

The compliance deadline for this modification is within 100 hours of time in service after 15 September 1994. This timeline is critical to ensure that all affected aircraft are modified promptly to prevent potential failures.

Background

The directive was issued in response to reports of collapsed nose gear on the affected aircraft models. Investigations revealed that the failure of the AN4-20 bolt connecting the lower drag link to the upper drag link was a significant factor in these incidents.

Safety notes

  • Failure of the AN4-20 bolt can lead to nose gear collapse, posing safety risks.
