Overview

This document is a service bulletin (SB-117) for the Robinson R44 series helicopters, specifically addressing compliance with FAA airworthiness directive AD 2023-11-07. The bulletin is directed towards owners, operators, and maintenance personnel of R44-series helicopters equipped with radar altimeters. It outlines the necessary actions to ensure compliance with the directive, which involves adding a specific page to the limitations section of the Pilot’s Operating Handbook (POH) for affected helicopters. The compliance procedure must be completed within the next 100 flight hours or by March 31, 2025, whichever comes first. The bulletin emphasizes the importance of addressing potential interference from 5G C-Band wireless broadband transmissions that could affect radar altimeter operations.

  • Compliance with AD 2023-11-07 is required within 100 flight hours or by March 31, 2025.
  • Affected helicopters are those equipped with radar altimeters operating in the U.S. or equivalent jurisdictions.
  • Operators must verify the inclusion of the Radio Altimeter Flight Restrictions page in the Pilot’s Operating Handbook.
  • Certain operations are prohibited due to 5G C-Band interference, including specific approaches and autopilot modes.
  • No parts are required for compliance; only labor is needed (0.2 labor-hour).

Compliance Procedure

The compliance procedure consists of two main steps. First, if the helicopter is equipped with a radar altimeter and operating in regions affected by AD 2023-11-07, the operator must verify that the Radio Altimeter Flight Restrictions page is included in the Pilot’s Operating Handbook. This page should be placed before the table of contents in the Limitations Section. If it is not included, the operator must print and insert the page provided in the bulletin. Second, appropriate maintenance record entries must be made to document compliance.

Affected Rotorcraft

This service bulletin applies to all R44-series helicopters that are equipped with radar altimeters and are operating in the United States or other countries that have implemented an equivalent airworthiness directive. The bulletin specifically addresses the operational limitations imposed by the presence of 5G C-Band wireless broadband interference.

Operational Restrictions

Due to the potential interference from 5G C-Band wireless broadband, certain operations requiring radar altimeter data are prohibited when operating in contiguous U.S. airspace. These restrictions include performing approaches that require radio altimeter minimums for offshore operations, engaging hover and Search and Rescue (SAR) autopilot modes that rely on radar altimeter data, and conducting takeoffs and landings that require radio altimeter data.

Safety notes

  • Operators must ensure compliance with the operational restrictions due to 5G interference to maintain safety.

Page 1 of 2 R44 SERVICE BULLETIN SB-117 DATE: 27 January 2025 TO: R44-series Owners, Operators, and Maintenance Personnel SUBJECT: Statement to Accompany AD 2023-11-07 ROTORCRAFT AFFECTED: R44-series Helicopters equipped with a radar altimeter operating in the US and other countries implementing AD 2023-11-07 or equivalent. TIME OF COMPLIANCE: Within next 100 flight hours or by 31 March 2025. BACKGROUND: The FAA and other aviation authorities have issued airworthiness directives placing restrictions on the operation of aircraft with radar altimeters not protected from 5G C-Band wireless broadband transmission interference. These airworthiness directives require the addition of a page to the limitations section of the flight manual of affected aircraft. All R44-series helicopters equipped with radar altimeters are affected and require this page. This service bulletin requires verification that the page has been added to the applicable R44 Pilot’s Operating Handbook on all affected R44’s. See Statement to Accompany AD 2023-11-07 for additional information. COMPLIANCE PROCEDURE: 1. If helicopter is equipped with radar altimeter and operating in the US or other countries implementing an airworthiness directive equivalent to AD 2023-11-07, verify the inclusion of the Radio Altimeter Flight Restrictions page (shown on page 2 of this bulletin) before the table of contents page of the Limitations Section of the applicable R44 Pilot’s Operating Handbook. If not already included, print and insert page provided on page 2 of this bulletin. 2. Make appropriate maintenance record entries. APPROXIMATE COST: Parts: None required (Radio Altimeter Flight Restrictions page included as part of Bulletin). Labor: 0.2 labor-hour. THE DESIGN ENGINEERING ASPECTS OF THIS BULLETIN HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO COMPLY WITH APPLICABLE FEDERAL AVIATION REGULATIONS AND ARE FAA APPROVED. Intentionally Blank R44 SB-117 Page 2 of 2 (Required by AD 2023-11-07) Radio Altimeter Flight Restrictions To be inserted before the table of contents page of the Limitations Section for all Robinson helicopters with radio (radar) altimeters. Due to the presence of 5G C-Band wireless broadband interference, when operating in the contiguous U.S. airspace, the following operations requiring radio altimeter are prohibited: • Performing approaches that require radio altimeter minimums for rotorcraft offshore operations. Barometric minimums must be used for these operations instead. • Engaging hover autopilot modes that require radio altimeter data. • Engaging Search and Rescue (SAR) autopilot modes that require radio altimeter data. • Performing takeoffs and landings in accordance with any procedure (Category A, Category B, or by Performance Class in the Rotorcraft Flight Manual or Operations Specification) that requires the use of radio altimeter data. Cut or fold along this line (This page to be printed on yellow paper.) FAA APPROVED: 27 JAN 2025
