No. IAIB 13-04 June 19, 2013 Page 1 of 1 Subject: Aviation Hazard Maps and Digital Database Survey Area of Concern: Aviation Operations Aviation Operations Distribution: Discussion: The aviation community requires essential hazard related data to be accurately annotated on various charts for several types of operations involving many end users. Efforts to acquire and depict such hazard information have used a variety of data sources and depictions that lacked standardization and a single, highly reliable data source. The implementation of electronic flight bags and other similar tools have further perpetuated the need for improved standardization in order to improve the safety and efficiency of our avia- tion operations. As a result, a survey has been developed to assess the needs of end users that will drive an effort towards improving the data quality and standardization of these hazard mitigation tools.
This survey is intended to cover a wide range of audiences encompassing all aspects aviation operations in- cluding management and the geospatial staff that support and create similar products. The National Interagen- cy Aviation Committee (NIAC) is working in partnership with the NWCG Geospatial Subcommittee (GSC) to gain a better understanding of how aviation hazard data is managed and used across a variety of operations.
