Some have c/ns with prefixes in the T40-, T41-, T42- and T43- series which have appeared on other civil registers and seem to be Fairchild-built. We also know that -AE suffixes apply to Aeronca constuction and T4. prefixes to Fleet production. The 3FH- prefixes had not been noted previously (FH = Fairchild Hagerstown ?) and we would welcome any information which would help to clarify the tie-ups between builders and c/ns of PT-19, PT-23 and PT-26 Cornells. (B.N.Stainer) 85/24 Casualty Compendium PART SEVENTEEN Our piece of kite-flying about the possible link between the Martinsyde F5 and the Semiquaver produced comments detailed below and some photos of the Hendon 1920 Aerial Derby winner G-EAPX. It is shown (above) being prepared for the race on 24.7.20 and (below) inverted after the crash on landing at the end of the Derby. The third photo (right) shows G-EAPX hangared later, with damaged to wings and propeller. (Photos via E.S.Toop/P.H.T.Green collection) First to clear up some remaining points from earlier casualty listings: 26.9.33 The only Dept of Commerce trimotor with a radio was Ford 5-AT-D c/n 5-AT-101, NS-1 using the call-sign KHRLO, thus it is likely that this was the aircraft involved in the crash near Lakeland. 10.12.34 The designation quoted originally for LN-BAH, Miles M.2M Hawk, is correct; comments on page 83/81 should be deleted. Not one but two M.2M versions were built and on C of A issue 1.12.34 LN-BAH had the Type Modification noted. It is illustrated in Don Brown's "Miles Aircraft since 1925" on p67 but incorrectly captioned G-ADCV, as the clearly visible name "Fefor" carried by LN-BAH proves. G-ADCV was the second M.2M which received its C of A on 6.4.35. Both had an enclosed two-passenger cabin behind the pilot. The owner of LN-BAH escaped the crash because bad weather delayed his flight in Denmark and he completed the journey by land earlier. 29.5.35 We can now add to p84/53 that the full type was Stinson SM6000B. 8.8.37 The CNAC accident is now known to have involved Sikorsky S.43W NC16930 c/n 4321. 15.6.39 Jim Halley comments that to the nautical a buoy is also known as a dolphin, so G-CARM probably hit a buoy - that is unless someone long ago incorrectly made the reverse assumption! 00-AIJ (p84/10J) We have no date information as yet, but Paul de Maeyer comments that no trace of it appears among the known military F.VIlb/3ms. Apart from an audible sigh of relief over the de-bugging of the Man Mohan Singh crash on p84/110, we have received a few comments about the accident entries unearthed by Fred Kirby and listed last time: The Martinsyde F5 does not appear to be the same as the Semiquaver as the photos above and other sources confirm that G-EAPX did indeed crash at Hendon after the race and that Courtney was the pilot. The date was 24.7.20 , as the RAC Gazette and authorities such as Harald Penrose testify. Peter Green adds that the undercarriage of the Semiquaver had been pulled down tight for the Olympia Show which opened on 12.7.20, a factor which was overlooked in the haste to prepare G-EAPX for the Aerial Derby. Though the take-off was successful there was no give in the undercarriage on landing and the aircraft overturned. Apparently it was swiftly repaired because Fred Raynham flew it in the Gordon Bennett Race in France on 28.9.20. Thus the Semiquaver could hardly have fitted another accident into July 1920 and so the mystery remains - what was the Martinsyde F5 if such a beast indeed existed? Regarding the Martinsyde F4A G-EATX we note that in "British Civil Aircraft" AJJ originally quoted the fate as "w/o 8.22" but in the 1974 edition amended this to "regn cane 4.8.22, believed sold abroad". Perhaps the accident on 14.7.21 was earlier assumed to be the cause of cancellation, disproved by the issue of a later C of A ? The final problem, that of Avro 504K G-EADA is solved by the photo on the next page showing that it did indeed carry those civil marks during the transition to 504N development aircraft. 85/25 The Avro 504N development air- craft G-EADA, probably taken during 1923 since it is shown with both the Lucifer engine and the 'N' type undercarriage and wings. (P.H.T.Green coin.) NEW PROBLEMS: Now for some more items from the 1920-22 insurance reports as researched by Fred Kirby, starting with a Martinsyde! Pilot: Howard Oakey Long reported: * "Martinsyde F4 17.3.22 Landing. Ran into SE.5A". Sources all agree that one F4, G-EAXB, was damaged beyond repair at Croydon in a ground collision with SE.5A G-EAXU. Peter Moss however, quotes the date as 17.4.22 and adds that this was "during the Whitsun Race Meeting". While the aircraft details seem beyond reasonable doubt, the true date is elusive. The problem is the date - April 17th could not possibly ever be Whitsun, so Fred has done some ecclesias- tical calculating and believes that Easter Sunday was on 16.4.22 and Whit Sunday therefore would be 4.6.22. So, unless the 1922 Whitsun meeting was held on Easter Monday there must be inconsistencies in Peter Moss1 story concerning G-EAXB and G-EAXU snd we now have three possible dates to choose from! Pilot: Capt Frank Crossley Broome reported the following incident: * "Viking II" amphibian. September 1920. Returning from Antwerp to Weybridge. Broken fuel line connection. Forced land- ing 8 miles from Ostend". There appears to have been only one Viking II, G-EASC which won first prize in the Antwerp Seaplane Trials in August 1920. All sources mention this, Putnam's "Vickers Aircraft" gives no fate, AJJ says "later crashed" or "wfu late in 1920", while Peter Moss says "Later crashed and marks lapsed". It seems that G-EASC was involved in an accident when returning from the Antwerp Trials although the exact date is not given, nor the degree of damage. Since the improved Viking III was flying, or about to fly by then, possibly Vickers decided against a rebuild of the earlier model even though damage could have been slight. Pilot: William Richardson Bailey of Stelvio, Newport, Mon, B licence no.598, reported: * "Accident, 7th May 1922. Avro 504K G-EBCL crashed near Newport, Mon. Broken legs and head injury". All our usual sources agree that G-EBCL crashed and the marks were cancelled 5.22, this report seems to complete the story. Pilot: Cyril Ralph Catesby, born 13.4.1901, Royal Aero Club Cert.7979 22.6.20, A licence 556 9.7.20. His flying hours at 14.12.20 are given as: 7hrs Centaur 4a, 20 hrs BE2e. By 9.1.23 he had a total of 39 hours. * "On 16.10.20 crashed into a wall when taking off from a small field with trees on 3 sides and buildings on the other. Machine written off". That machine he reported to be a BE2e. We know that BE2e G-EAJV was sold to a C.R.Catesby with change of ownership date of 9.20 recorded. Peter Moss gives G-EAJV as "wfu on C of A expiry 18.8.21" and AJJ as "crashed 10.21" but in view of the above it seems reasonable to assume that G-EAJV crashed on 16.10.20 and was not flown again. Mr Catesby's address is given as Highfield, Croxley Green, Herts but the location of the "small field" is unknown. Perhaps it was in the Croxley Green area - local sleuths please check your vintage newspaper reports. Pilot: Ronald Herbert Leavey reported an accident in slightly more detail: * "26.11.21 - sideslipped into ground whilst banking and crashed at Hildenborough near Tonbridge. Aircraft wrecked. Passenger unhurt. Pilot - facial cuts". Aircraft type or registration not mentioned. British Civil Aircraft Registers gives Avro 504K G-EAFQ as crashing at Hildenborough, Kent in Novemher 1921 and unless the process was habit-forming we can probably safely say that G-EAFQ actually crashed on 26.11.21. Pilot: Ralph Stuart Park reported two accidents which took place in Sweden: * "Fairey Seaplane. 22.7.20. Sundsvall - Stockholm. Near Gefle at 1000ft rudder control broke. Little control. Crashed into trees about 50yds from shore on small island. Engine salved. Aircraft complete write-off." Peter Moss has for Fairey IIIC G-EAMY "Crashed into an inaccesible forest when a rudder control cable snapped and marks cancelled 8.20". AJJ says it crashed in Sweden 8.20 and Putnam's 'Fairey Aircraft' combines 8.20 with the rudder cable information. It seems that the accident to G-EAMY took place on 22.7.20, though 'Gefle' may be an error for the town of Gavle. * "A.W. March 1920. Sweden. Attempting take-off from soft field. Muddy. Thawing snow. Wing tip caught tree. Damaged undercarriage, left planes, prop etc. Aircraft later rebuilt." Presumably this was Armstrong Whitworth FK8 G-EAJS which all sources agree left Hounslow for Sweden on 11.11.19. Peter Moss says"sold in Sweden and marks cancelled in August 1920". We do not know whether G-EAJS had already been sold in Sweden at the time of the accident or whether as a result of it the FK8 was repaired and operated locally. It did not become a Swedish civil aircraft. Pilot: David Forgham Anderson, born 20.3.1896, A licence 388, approx 300 hrs on Sopwith Scouts mostly, also Avro 504K, DH.4, DH.6, DH.9, FK.3, Centaur 4. He reported two accidents: * 13.5.20 "Testing new Centaur 4a. Faulty tailplane. Rose about 40 feet then side-slipped into the ground. Total loss." The tailplane problem was a design fault corrected after the fourth aircraft. AJJ stated that 8 Centaur 4s were built of which 5 were apparently after the 5.20 date. Of the 3 others two were sold and not scrapped until 1930 and the other was sold to Belgium in 1922. Thus either the pilot underestimated the recuperative properties of the Centaur or possibly he was in fact flying the Centaur 2A which crashed at Northolt by 7.20 due to crossed elevator cables. * "1.8.20. Forced landing on foreshore Yarmouth. U/c and prop smashed landing in shallow water. Further damage by sea- water and during salvage." As the pilot had a Central Aircraft connection this could possibly have been one of their Avro 504Ks. If so a prime candidate could be G-EAGI which AJJ in 'Avro Aircraft' gives as crashed 7.20 while Peter Moss says "Marks cancelled in July 1920 prior to C of A expiry on 11.8.20, believed due to an accident". Neither do we know whether this was Great Yarmouth or Yarmouth IoW - once again a task for local researchers to sort out. Pilot: Oscar Philip Jones reported one accident of note: * Westland Limousine G-EARF. 10.6.22. Engine failure resulting in forced landing at Neeuwerkerken, Belgium, "under- carriage and bottom planes damaged. Fuselage twisted". We know that G-EARF was leased to Instone Air Line and then purchased by them in June 1922 - presumably before 10.6.22 unless they bought a bent aeroplane! It is agreed that the marks were cancelled on 1.6.23 when the C of A expired on 16.5.23. Could the Limousine have been repaired in the mean- time? It seems doubtful from the report of fuselage damage, it is more likely that having had a new C of A in May 1923 there was no urgency about cancelling the registration until this at least had expired. To be c
