Applicability
The directive applies to all models of the Beechcraft 18 series, including C-45G, TC-45G, C-45H, TC-45H, TC-45J, RC-45J, D18C, D18S, E18S-9700, G18S, H18, JRB-3N, 3NM, and 3TM that are fitted with Volpar tricycle landing gear.
Requirement
The directive requires a visual inspection of the main landing gear walking beam upper attach bolt (P/No. AN 179-46A) for integrity and proper installation. If necessary, the bolt must be removed and replaced with a NAS 149-80 bolt and associated hardware as specified in the Volpar Inc. Service Bulletin No. 22 dated June 1, 1981. Additionally, the installation of the new bolt must be visually inspected for integrity.
Compliance
Compliance with the directive is required within specific timeframes: the initial inspection must be completed within 10 hours of time in service after September 25, 1981. The replacement of the bolt must occur within 200 hours of time in service, and subsequent inspections must be conducted at intervals not exceeding 3000 hours of time in service.
Background
The directive was issued due to concerns regarding the potential failure of the main landing gear walking beam upper attach bolt during normal service operations, which could compromise the safety of the aircraft.
Safety notes
- Failure of the MLG walking beam upper attach bolt may occur in normal service.
