Box 1240 672 South Washington Afton, WY 83110 USA Tel: 307-885-3151 Fax: 307-885-9674 Email:aviat@aviataircraft.com engineering@aviataircraft.com DATE: June 23, 2008 REVISION: IR SUBJECT: Fuel Flop Tube Hose Assembly MODELS AFFECTED: All Pitts S-1 Series and S-2 series aircraft TIME OF COMPLIANCE: BEFORE NEXT FLIGHT________________________ Engineering Data is FAA Approved 1- EFFECTIVITY On Pitts aircraft and any spare aircraft part sold as: Fuel Flop Tube Hose Assembly S-1, S-IT, Part Number 1-603-010 S-2S, Part Number 1-603-010 and Part Number 2-6502-013 (Auxiliary tank) S-2, S-2A, S-2B, S-2C, Part Number 2-6502-003 Flop Tube Assembly S-1, S-1S, S-1T Part Number 1-0603-038 S-2S Part Number 1-0603-038 and Part Number 2-6502-011 (Auxiliary tank) S-2, S-2A, S-2B, S-2C Part Number 2-6502-001 2- PURPOSE To notify owners of above aircraft and aircraft spare parts to potential safety of flight condition in the ability of the flop hose to pick up fuel in inverted flight. 3- BACKGROUND Sky International, Inc. has received service difficulty reports concerning the potential stiffness of the fuel pickup hose manufactured by Stratoflex within the last five (5) years. The reports indicate that a stiff tube may provide a potential fuel starvation condition during inverted flight. Consequently, Sky International has changed the material used to fabricate the flop hose assemblies and flop tube assemblies and no longer uses the Stratoflex hose. Contact Aviat Aircraft Inc. parts department for replacement assembly availability and cost. SERVICE BULLETIN No. 34 ____SKY INTERNATIONAL INC. SUPERCEDES SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 22 PART A ONLY_______ 1- Replace Flop Hose Assembly or Flop Tube Hose Assembly per instructions. 2- Record logbook entry in aircraft log book. 3- Complete and submit compliance letter. 5- INSTRUCTIONS* Read instructions thoroughly before proceeding with any work. To remove Flop Tube Assembly 1- Disconnect battery. 2- Drain fuel from aircraft using fuel system quick drains. 3- Remove RH lower cowl. (See Figure 1) 4- Remove RH wing leading edge fairing. (See Figure 1) 5- Remove RH side panel exposing fuel tank. (See Figure 1) 6- Remove fuel hose from fuel valve and fuel tank. (See Figure 2) 7- Remove 90° fitting from fuel tank. (See Figure 2) 8- Remove Flop Tube Assembly. (See Figure 2) CAUTION : Care should be taken in removing the flop tube assembly from fuel tank to avoid damaging the threads. Replacing Flop Hose only A- Remove flop tube weight and fitting. B- Discard old hose. (New hose has manufacture date on ferrule). C- Reassemble flop tube weight and fitting to new hose by using appropriate sealing and anti-seize compound threads of hose. D- Verify that flop tube weight and fitting are properly tightened on the flop hose with not more than 4 threads and not less than 1 thread showing. E- Reinstall per instructions to reinstall Flop Tube Assembly below. To reinstall Flop Tube Assembly (New flop hose assembly has manufacture date on ferrule) 1- Reinstall flop tube assembly using appropriate sealing and anti-seize compound. 2- Reinstall 90°fitting into fuel tank using appropriate sealing and anti-seize compound. (See Figure 2) 3- Reinstall fuel hose to fuel valve and fuel tank. (See Figure 2) 4- Reinstall RH side panel. (See Figure 1) 5- Reinstall RH wing leading edge fairing. (See Figure 1) 6- Reinstall RH lower cowl. (See Figure 1) 7- Reconnect battery. 8- Fuel aircraft and verify no fuel leaks static and pressure.
