AIRWORTHINESS LIMITATIONS This section is FAA approved and specifies the inspections, and other maintenance, which are required under 14 CFR 43.16 and 91.403, unless an alternative program has been FAA approved. There are “No airworthiness limitations associated with this type design change”. 3. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION The AKV Starter Interrupt Kit is designed to prevent starter engagement and potential hot starts with the throttle or fuel cutoff open. A hot start (exceeding the engine start temperature limits) on initial ground starts will possibly result in removal of the engine for inspection and repair. The kit provides two (2) micro switches. One that detects the throttle in the closed position and the second that detects the fuel control unit (FCU) is also in the closed position. Either will electrically interrupt the starter relay if they are open. The RHSI circuit is wired in series with the rotor brake which also provides interruption of the starter relay when the rotor brake is engaged. An amber indicator light marked “RHSI L1 PTT” is located next to the pilot collective and when lighted, indicates to the pilot that the throttle or fuel cutoff is in the open position. It also has a built in press-to-test to verify the bulb is operational. Power to the starter interrupt kit is provided via a 1 amp circuit breaker located on the circuit breaker panel in front of the copilot seat and is marked “AKV RHSI” In order for the press-to-test function to operate, the battery switch must be ON, the rotor brake off and circuit breaker pushed in. The starter interrupt circuit is electrically removed from the starter circuit after the MGBP switch rises. NOTE: The starter interrupt kit can be de-energized or overridden by pulling the circuit breaker. Normal operation of initial on ground engine starting without protection is then provided. After normal engine start, the AKV Starter Interrupt kit is disabled via the MGBP rising. This allows for in-flight engine restarts in the event of an engine failure. AKV, Inc RHSI-R66-ICA Robinson Helicopter Starter Interrupt kit P/N RHSI for the R66 Revision Instructions for Continued Airworthiness Nov.10th, 2020 Page 3 of 32 CAUTION: When the starter Interrupt is disabled after MGBP rising, it will not provide protection during in-flight engine restarts. It is therefore important that the pilot follow the basic rotorcraft flight manual (RFM) in-flight engine restart procedure. 4. MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS 4.1 Routine Cleaning & Maintenance Routine Cleaning & Maintenance may be required as the result of an inspection. Re- tighten loose fasteners to the standard torque values shown in Table 1 and Table 2. Perform routine cleaning to remove contaminants from the Starter Interrupt Kit. Remove grease, fungus, and ground-in dirt from equipment and mounting brackets using a clean, soft cloth. 4.2 Tools Only those required for re-tightening of mounting hardware 4.3 Overhaul There are no component overhaul requirements for this type design change. Under normal operating conditions, the Starter Interrupt Kit will not require component overhaul. All parts and assemblies are designed to be replaced “On Condition”. Any maintenance needed to the Starter Interrupt Kit or its installation beyond that described in this document requires that the components be removed and returned to AKV, Inc. The decision to return damaged components may be a subjective one and should be made by a qualified A & P Mechanic. 4.4 Component Retirement/Retirement Life The Starter Interrupt Kit has been designed with components that have a virtually unlimited life span. However, it is anticipated that some components may require replacement at some time during the service life of the helicopter. The decision to replace these parts is a subjective one and should be made by the operator or an A & P Mechanic. REQUIRED INSPECTIONS 5.1 Annual Inspection This section contains the time limit intervals and requirements for the scheduled and conditional inspections for the Starter Interrupt Kit Installation. The inspection items are determined through experience, tests, and the judgment of mechanics and engineers. Every calendar inspection is a visual and thorough inspection to determine the airworthiness of the Starter Interrupt Kit. Qualified persons must perform the inspections in accordance with standard aircraft practices and the applicable maintenance manuals. An Annual inspection using this RHSI-R66-ICA document (Instructions for Continued Airworthiness), is required. When using this document to perform the required inspections, use the “Inspection Task Description” forms below to record the appropriate data. Any reference data needed to perform this inspection, other than this document, will be listed in the “Data Reference” column of the inspection forms. The inspection task to be completed is described in the “Inspection Task Description” column of the inspection form. When each task is satisfactorily completed, the mechanic performing the inspection task signs the “Mechanic” column for that task. If the inspection task fails the inspection, the reason for the failure must be determined and remedial action taken before the “Mechanic” block can be signed off. Remedial action may involve cleaning, verifying correct operation, adjusting the tightness of fasteners and hardware, sending the assembly to the manufacturer for overhaul or replacement, etc. Once the appropriate remedial action has been taken and the inspection task has been satisfactorily performed, the mechanic may sign off the “Mechanic” block. Once all tasks are signed off in the “Mechanic” Column, the inspection form may be signed off at the top of the form and the inspection has then been completed. 5.2 Special Inspection In the event of a hard landing, perform the “Annual Inspection” tasks prior to returning the aircraft to service. Verifying that with the system armed, engine start is achievable and that the system is disarmed after clutch engagement. This confirms that engine restarts can be accomplished after an in-flight engine failure. 3. Verifying the system can be disarmed by pulling the circuit breaker. IF THIS TEST FAILS, FOLLOW THE TROUBLE SECT. 7 END TEST 6. REMOVING PARTS The Starter Interrupt kit may be overridden such as during replacement of the position switch S1, Relay R1 or R2. If the aircraft needs to be flown while replacement of parts is procured, this is accomplished by pulling the circuit breaker marked “AKV RHSI” and installing a zip tie under the circuit breaker head to prevent energizing the breaker until replacement parts have been installed. TROUBLESHOOTING The troubleshooting table provides the mechanic with guidance for diagnosing malfunctions and the recommended course of action to remedy the fault. Additional help can be found in the Inspection Task (operational task) starting on Pg. 7 or by contacting AKV. See Page 1 for support contact information. Fault Probable Cause Action Test failure 1. Relay R1 or R2 failure 1. Reset Circuit Breaker. If it does not reset, check for wiring short. 2. Check position switch S1 is adjusted Correctly 3. Check FCU position switch S2 is adjusted Correctly and there is proper ground bonding of the switch thru the bracket to airframe ground. 4. If correctly adjusted, replace position switch S1 or S2. 5.
