Overview

The Cessna 190 is a single-engine piston airplane built from 1947 to 1954. It seats 4 to 5. The registry's family-level figures reach up to 139 kt cruise, 590 nm range and a 16000 ft service ceiling. The documents supplied add little performance data, so the useful buyer checks are the aileron hinge brackets and the fuel selector valve.

  • Cessna 190: piston single, built 1947-1954, 4 to 5 seats; family maximums are up to 590 nm range and 139 kt cruise.
  • Service Bulletin SEB04-1 Rev 1 requires inspecting the inboard aileron hinge brackets at each 100 hour or annual inspection.
  • Aluminum hinge brackets 0322709 and 0322709-1 delete the repetitive special inspection requirement.
  • The fuel selector valve has four positions: Left, Both, Right, Off. A PMA replacement is partly eligible for the 190.

About this document
How many people does the Cessna 190 seat?

The Cessna 190 is listed with 4 to 5 seats. The registry family record shows a maximum of 5 passengers across its variants.

What performance can I expect from a Cessna 190?

The supplied documents give no variant-specific figures for the Cessna 190. The family record shows maximums of up to 139 kt cruise, 590 nm range and 16000 ft service ceiling. Treat these as upper limits and confirm against the airplane's own flight manual.

Is there a mandatory inspection on the Cessna 190?

Yes, for the serials covered. Service Bulletin SEB04-1 Rev 1 requires the Cessna 190 inboard aileron hinge brackets to be inspected for corrosion and cracks at each 100 hour or annual inspection. Fitting the new aluminum brackets deletes the repetitive inspection.

Can the Cessna 190 fuel selector valve be replaced with an aftermarket part?

McFarlane's PMA valve MC0311070 is a direct replacement for the Cessna 0311070 and lists the Cessna 190 with partial model eligibility. Check FAA Part Manufacturer Approvals for your airplane's specific eligibility.

Aileron hinge brackets (SEB04-1 Rev 1)

Cessna's bulletin dated October 3, 2012 covers 190s from 1948 through 1953, serial numbers 7004 thru 7999 and 16000 thru 16183. It is mandatory and repeats every 100 hour or annual/12 month inspection. The inboard brackets are checked for corrosion and cracks. The original brackets were magnesium, which can corrode or crack more readily than aluminum.

Identifying and replacing brackets

Magnesium forgings are marked 0822605-497 or 0322707-2. Aluminum forgings are marked 0822605-499, and unmarked brackets are aluminum. Replacements are 0322709 (left) and 0322709-1 (right). Nuts on the bracket-to-rear-spar attachment are torqued to 25 inch-pounds. Aileron attach nuts are torqued to 70 inch-pounds. Specified aileron travel is 25 up and 25 down.

Fuel selector valve

The Cessna 190 fuel system uses a four-position rotating selector (Left, Both, Right, Off) that controls flow from the two wing tanks. McFarlane PMA valve MC0311070 replaces Cessna 0311070, with partial model eligibility for the 190, so confirm eligibility for the specific airplane. In overhaul, cover-plate clearance must be .001 to .007 in. Guide insert inner diameter must be no greater than .658 in.

Safety notes

  • Do not use a mechanical method to remove paint from magnesium aileron hinge brackets; the bulletin cautions against it.
  • Non-compliance with SEB04-1 may let corrosion or cracks go undetected and reduce the structural integrity of the aileron hinge brackets.
  • Check that the fuel selector has solid detent action and free handle movement before any disassembly.
