Aircraft Overview

The Cessna 182 Skylane is a four-seat, high-performance aircraft that offers more payload and speed than the Cessna 172. It is often the next step for new private pilots, requiring a high-performance endorsement due to its increased power and torque.

Performance and Payload

The Skylane is capable of carrying four adults over medium distances and has a larger fuel capacity, allowing for longer flights with fewer passengers. Pilots must manage the higher payload to adhere to weight and balance limitations.

Training and Checkout

Pilots interested in flying the Cessna 182 at the San Carlos Flight Center can easily get checked out by reviewing the aircraft systems and performance information from the Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) and acquiring necessary flying skills.

Engine and Systems

The Cessna 182 features a constant speed propeller, which introduces new engine controls and complexities for pilots transitioning from lower-performance aircraft. Understanding these systems is crucial for safe operation.

FAASTeam presents: C182 Systems The Cessna 182 is a four seat, high-performance airplane. It is known as the Skylane and has a variety of mission profiles. With more payload and speed than a Cessna 172, the Skylane is often the next step in flight training for new private pilots. Learning to fly the Skylane involves getting a high-performance endorsement. This encompasses learning to handle its higher power and associated greater torque as well as monitoring and managing engine temperature. The Skylane has a constant speed propeller which introduces new engine controls which is an additional complexity for the pilot stepping up to the Cessna 182. All these features make it a good airplane for carrying four adults over a medium distance or using its larger fuel capacity to fly longer distances with fewer passengers. It is a great airplane for a trip to Los Angeles, Portland, or Seattle. The higher payload provides flexibility but must be managed to conform to aircraft weight & balance limitations. San Carlos Flight Center has four Cessna 182s with a variety of equipment and instrumentation. Getting checked out in our 182s is as easy as reviewing the aircraft systems and performance information from the POH, and then acquiring the skills to handle the aircraft in all phases of flight.
