This recommendation apparently imposed a burden on the operator using these models, as few can carry a spare carbureter in stock,. It is perfectly satisfactory for authorized service personnel. to replace the bellows during ovc'rhaul. The reason for issuing Bulletin 1113-60 was that we were notified that operators and their service people were altering the bellows settings in the fi('lLl. This cannot be done successfully in the field and still maintain tl,e fllel-air ratios established by the manufac- turer. Aircraft SERVICE BULLETIN 1116-60 November 8, 1960 TO: All Outlets SUBJECT: "FAClDRY STANDARDS" There is a tremendous amount of hard work, sound research and testing performed to establish "FAClDRY STANDARDS". Altering the carbureter from standard in order to "improve" perform- ance can be a hazard to airworthiness, and also a costly practice. All that any A & E should ever do is to make the particular engine he is working on as good as the manufacturer intended it to be~ But, he can make it a lot worse. Fuel consumption of an engine is arrived at by careful research. While it is always desireable to use less fuel, mixtures must be main- tained within the detonation limits established for each particular engine- fuel combination. Some of our calibrations are built to deliver mixtures up to 15% richer than best power. On the surface this would appear to be bad carburetion ----, but there are sound reasons for this which cannot be changed without affecting such important factors as engine life, cooling, safety, etc. Marvel-Schebler is committed to supply carbureters to the engine manufacturers' specifications, using sealed tested masters as a guide. Any change in fuel delivery must be requested from and authorized by the engine, or airframe manufacturer. What generated this refresher bulletin on Factory Standards? An operator of two helicopters ---- upset about fuel delivery, when the engines were equipped with carbureters we developed for the Ranger inverted 6 cylinder engine in 1941. The right carbureter, but with the wrong engine and airplane attached. ~~RVEL-SCHEBLER PRODUCTS DIVISION Service Sal s es MARVEL-SCHEBLER PRODUCTS DIVISION BORG-WARNER CORPORATION MAIN OFFICE AND FACTORY DECATUR",-ILLINOIS, U. Aircraft SERVICE BULLETIN #12-59 September 9, 1959 Subject: Installing and. setting float #A30-629 inMA-4-5 Series carbureters e We have been advised a little difficulty is being encountered during the install- ation and setting subject floats. We recommend the following procedure: It is necessary to bend the float levers to establish the required 13/64" setting between the float and gasket surface. THE TOP OF THE FLOAT MUST BE PARALLEL WITH THE GASKET. WHEN BENDING LEVER TO ADJUST HOLD SECURELY AT THIS POINT WITH NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS An excellent toe1 to. check float clearance can be made from a scrap bowl. Cut or mill off the bottom at a point of 2" from the top. Cut off about 1/2 of the pump cavity. Install two A15-A17 screws, one on each side, and cut off the heads. These will act as locating pins for the throttle body. With this "gage" clearance can be observed through the entire float travel, and when tilted from one side to the other as well. We use this procedure on our assembly lines, and recommend you use it too. If you don't have a bowl available for this purpose, we can ship you one prepared as above for $5.00 each net. j Mar~~~~~e~r~~p~r~o~dAu/Clt~-~~.ion rJ?
