S.A. “FAA DOA EA-1 Approved” September 28, 1973 S/M Subject: Models Affected: PA -24-l 80, PA -24-250, PA -24-260 and PA -24-400 Comanche PA -30 Twin Comanche PA-39 Twin Comanche C/R PA -31 and PA -31-300 Navajo PA -31-350 Navajo Chieftain PA-31P Navajo Compliance Time : Purpose : Instructions : Warning -- Improper Use of Rudder Pedal Serial Numbers Affected: All All All 31-l to 31-7300976 incl. 31-5001 to 31-7305125 incl. 31P-1 to 31P-7300172 incl. Immediate. The rudder pedals and toe brakes are suspended from a torque tube which extends across the fuselage in the lower forward cabin area. Because of the nature of its construc- tion and its proximity to the rudder pedals/toe brakes, the pilot may inadvertently place his feet on the torque tube instead of the rudder pedals/toe brakes. This may be more likely to occur with a pilot who is not familiar with the controls, or if the pilot is not concentrating on proper foot placement on the pedals. To preclude interference with the proper function of the rudder pedals and toe brakes, a warning statement accom- panies this service release to be applied to all Owner’s Handbooks and/or Pilot’s Operating Manuals applicable to the above referenced aircraft. The warning statement is reproduced below: WARNING “The rudder pedals are suspended from a torque tube which extends across the fuselage. The pilot should become familiar with the proper positioning of his feet on the rudder pedals so as to avoid interference with the torque tube when moving the rudder pedals or operating the toe brakes. ” 1, Remove the paper backing from the self-adhering warning statement, which is enclosed with each copy of this Service Bulletin mailed to owners of record. If your aircraft has a 5 l/4” x 8” Owner’s Handbook apply the warning statement insert inside and at the top of the front cover. If your aircraft has an 8 l/2” x 11” Pilot’s Operating Manual, and there is no “Operating Tips” section, apply the warning statement insert at the bottom of the Operating Procedures index. If your aircraft has an 8 l/2” x 11” Pilot’s Operating Manual containing an “Operating Tips” section, apply the warning statement insert on the last page of Operating Tips. Make appropriate log book entry. Material Required : One (1) each per aircraft Warning Statement Insert, Piper Part No. 757 436. Availability of Parts: One (1) each Warning Statement Insert, Piper Part No. 757 436, accompanies each copy of this service release mailed to owners of record. Additional Warning Statements, if required, are available through your Piper Dealer. Effectivity Date : This Service Bulletin is effective October 8, 1973.
