Adjacent to the Coachella and Imperial Valleys, where food supplies are shipped the world over, where the population has exploded and where busi ness and industry continue to mature. Friends of Thermal Airport "A California non-profit public benefit corporation." The Coachella Valley is located in the heart of South ern California’s deserts, approximately 110 miles from Los Angeles and San Diego, and about 270 miles from Phoenix. Palm Springs is situated on the west ern edge of the Valley with either other incorporated cities, and several unincorporated areas extending about 35 miles eastward to Thermal Airport, and on to the Salton Sea. The Valley is served by 3 airports. The city owned Palm Springs Regional Airport (900 acres) for Air Carrier and General Aviation; the privately owned Bermuda Dunes Airport (100 acres) for Commuter and General Aviation; and the Riverside County owned Thermal Air port (2450 acres) for General Aviation - including large corporate jets. The Navy turned over Thermal Airport to the County of Riverside in the late 1940’s with the provision that it remain an airport. When the Department of the Navy built Thermal Airport in 1942, the Coachella Valley was virtually undeveloped. Few envisioned that some 50 years later the Valley would be known as a world-class destination resort, a playground of presidents, home for movie stars and some of the best golfing and tennis in the world. Just looking at Thermal Airport, named after the near-by unincorporated city of Thermal, it is hard to imagine the wondrous and historical avia tion activity that took place here. Eleanor Wagner, a veteran of the famous WWII Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP), and Thermal Airport manager during the 1950’s re calls that there were flight training classes, model airplane building, Air Force Reserve meetings, Civil Air patrol missions, Ninety-Nine’s women pilot activities, crop dusting, etc. Also, there was the last of the low altitude speed runs when North American Aviation and Douglas Aircraft com peted to break the sound barrier in the North American F-86 Sabre Jet and the Douglas F4D Skyray. The great stunt pilot Paul Mantz flew a clipped wing Stearman through the hangar as a sequence in a movie called “Hollywood Stunt Pilot”'. Famous people. You bet! The first lady of aviation, Jackie Cochran and her husband Floyd Odium, called Thermal Airport their “winter home” for 13V their handsome Lockheed Lodestar. So many more, such as Jimmy Doolittle, Chuck Yeager, Pete Everest, General Al Boyd, Hoyt Vanden berg, test pilots, politicians, industrialists, ranchers, and of course one of the most famous, President Dwight D. Eisenhower who made the Coachella Valley his Western White House. The By-Laws of the Friends of Thermal Airport, Inc. were adopted by the Board of Directors on October 12,1987 and amended on February 25,1988 to change from “A California Non-Profit Mutual Benefit Corporation”, to “A California Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation”. Major Agricultural Interests, Developers, and landowners that stood to gain significantly were approached for financial support. Individuals such as Howard Marguleas, Chairman, Sun World, International; Ernie Vossler, Executive V.P., Landmark Land Company - developers of the famed PGA West Golf Resort; and Bill Bone, President, Sunrise Corporation - a premier builder of resorts and homes were some of the early major benefactors. In addition to financial supporters, the Friends were fortunate to have the support of such elected officials as, Congressman Al McCandless, State Assemblyman Steve Clute, Riverside County Supervisor Patricia “Corky” Larson, local Mayors and Councilpersons. One of the milestones in the Friends activities was having Admiral Donald Engen, immediate past FAA Administrator, as guest speaker at a Friends sponsored luncheon in January, 1989. There was an excellent turn-out for this event. Herman Bliss, Chief, Airports Division, FAA Western Region also attended the luncheon. Admiral Engen’s views on the economic benefits of airports and their importance to a community were well received. Howard Marguleas volunteered to Chair and help form the Blue Ribbon Committee which is now composed of some of the leading citizens of the Coachella Valley namely, Leonard Firestone, Alexander Haagen III, Ernest Hahn, Edwin C. Johnsen, Karen Oppenheim, Dorothy “Jake” Whan, and Charles Slack. All add credibility to the Organization and the Mission. For the record, the original Friends were individuals, from all walks of life, with different motivations whose dedication and hard work carried the organization through the very difficult formative period. The original Board of Directors drew members from Chambers of Commerce, Cities, Developers, Investment Corporations, Realtors, Department Stores, Builders, Farmers, and the Fixed Base Operator at Thermal Airport. Prior to incorporation, Bob Horn provided the leadership as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Then, on December 3,1987 William T. (Bill) Brown, one of the original Directors, was elected as the first President. Bill, was also President of La Quinta Air Services, that held the master lease for providing the FBO services at the airport. His vision, dedication and hands-on leadership played a major role in all the Friends accomplish ments. Bob Horn went on to be the first Executive Director followed by Fergus Homme. David Switzer is present Executive Director. Many of the early original officers and Directors are still very active in their positions after four years. They are Ken Johnson, Leatha Lockhart, 6 Treesa Cotton, Joe Shaffer, John Dicken, Wally Bolmeier, David Quinto, and Susan Harvey. Kyle Denning, although no longer a Director, has con tinued to contribute as an Officer in Lusardi Land Company, a major developer in the area. Although not original Directors, current Directors Friend Frank Wilson and Jesse Payne, have both been very involved. Frank as Chairman of the Friend’s Airport Committee, and member of the Airport Land Use Commission; and Jesse as a 70 yr. resident/landowner of property near the airport, and consistent supporter at Public Hearings and meetings. Currently, the Friends have 249 members and growing. Annual memberships range from $25 for an Individual to $1000 or more for Major Benefactors. With the membership comes a beautiful plaque, followed by quarterly newsletters and meetings, with an annual dinner meeting for the election of Directors and Officers. There is a 33 member Board of Directors and an Executive Committee which meets the last Wednesday of every month. The full Board meets the first Wednesday of each month. Friends of Thermal Airport was nominated for an FAA Certificate of Recognition by state Assemblyman $teve Clute and state $enator Robert Presley. The nomination was supported by Patricia “Corky” Larson, Fourth District $upervisor, Board of Supervisors, County of Riverside; Con gressman Al McCandless, and the FAA Western-Pacific regional office in Los Angeles. Mr. Leonard L. Griggs, Jr., FAA Assistant Administrator for Airports, Washington, D.C., concurred with the recommendation, and the FAA presented a Certificate of Recognition to the Friends at the Annual Members Dinner in November 1991. Marguleas began his career in the agribusiness industry 34 years ago. He is today co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of $un World International, Inc. Marguleas graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1957 with a degree in agricultural economics. In 1976 Marguleas founded $un World, Inc. and in 1980 formed a joint venture with United Brands Company (now Chiquita Brands, Cincinnati). In 1983 $un World repurchased United Brands’ 50% interest and is currently operating as an independent corporation. Bun World International is involved in all aspects of California agriculture. The highly publicized DiVine Ripe® tomato, Le Rouge Royale® sweet red pepper and Bun World Seedless® watermelon, are but some of the recently-touted specialty items for which Sun World has become internationally recognized. Today he is widely recognized as an innovative and aggressive leader within the produce industry; in 1990, the influential trade publication The Packer honored Marguleas with its prestigious “Produce Marketer for All Seasons” award. Marguleas is currently a stockholder and member of the Board of Directors of the Orange County-based Irvine Company. He was part of the orig inal group, including Henry Ford, Al Taubman and Donald Bren, that purchased the company in July of 1977. In addition, he served as the 1988 Chairman of the Board of Directors for the California Chamber of Commerce, with which he has been associ ated since 1973. Margueleas holds trusteeships at The Bob Hope Cultural Center, Eisenhower Medical Center, the American Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. In 1971, he was elected to the Young Presidents Organization and in 1986 he became a member of the Chief Executives Organization. In 1989 he was named to the Board of the California Council on Science and Technology in Irvine. On the state agricultural front, Margueleas served four years under Governors Brown and Reagan as a member of the State Board of Agriculture, 1964-1968. In addition to chairing Sun World’s board of directors, Margueleas also sits on the firm’s eight-member executive committee. Marguleas is a major supporter/benefactor of Friends of Thermal Airport, sponsors of the 1992 Air Race Classic, and serves as Chairman of its Blue Arrow Committee. Many famous shootouts took place here, most notable being the “Blevins Shootout” which closed the chapter on the cattle and sheep range wars of Northern, Arizona. This history can be relived in the Navajo County Courthouse/ Museum and Visitors Center in Downtown Holbrook. A walking tour of the “Bucket of Blood Saloon”, “Blevins House” and other attractions can be seen. Holbrook is well known as the “Gateway to the Petrified Forest National Park and Painted Desert.” This internationally known attraction holds visitors spellbound with it’s beauty, attractions and oldest dinosaur remains in the world. Today Holbrook has a choice of 24 motels (940 rooms) two RV/Campgrounds (275 spaces), 23 restaurants (we are especially well known for our Mexican food) and a variety of support services. If golfing is your game, the city provides a nine hole course for $6 or $10 for 18 holes. Handball, tennis and racquetball courts are available. For evening fun we have the Roxy Theatre, P&M Bowling, KOA Miniature Golf (summer only) and various lounges with a variety of western music. The airport has a 5,000 foot lighted run way with A.W.O.S. and has nationally known businesses, which do aircraft refinishing, engine repair, upholstery, aircraft maintenance, aircraft research and development. In the very near future, a new 6,000 foot east/west runway Cossatot River will be available with an LL.S. Shady Lake recreation area lies on the extreme southern edge of the Ouachita National Forest adjacent to the 14,433 acre Caney Creek Wilderness Area. The 25 acre lake and recreation area became a reality through the Civilian Conservation Corps which was established in 1933. Thousands of visitors each year enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, boating, swim ming, and picnicking. Visitors find the pace is easy, and it’s a great place to grow up, and a great place to wind down! We wish you a good tail wind and a happy landing. Janssen Park JACK L. NIMMO 15 Elk City Elk Citians have always been a shining example of Western Hospitality. It’s only natural when you come from a proud, pio neering history combined with a quality of life that makes Elk City an ideal place to work and live. Originally called Crowe, the townspeople renamed the town “Busch” in hopes that Adolphus Busch would build a brewery in their town. When the brewery didn’t materialize, the name Elk City was adopted. Elk City was named for Elk Creek which was named in honor of Elk River, an Indian Chief. Elk City has strong ties to agriculture with beef and daily cattle pro duction, cotton, alfalfa, wheat, and other grains. The Elk City Old Town Museum is the authentic tum-of-the-centu- ry, gingerbread-style home of an early Elk City merchant. The Beautler Brothers Rodeo Hall, on the second floor of the museum, houses a col lection of photographs, trophies, mementos and equipment donated by the Beutler Brothers who were nationally famous for the rodeo stock they produced on their ranches near Elk City. Adjacent to the Old Town Complex is the 75-acre Elk City Park. The park provides out standing recreational facilities including a challenging 18-hole minia ture golf course, swimming pool, fishing pond, fenced playground areas, a unique miniature train ride that encircles the pond and golf course. Also included in the park are tennis courts, a lighted softball diamond and lighted volleyball sand courts. In the early thirties, the WPA constructed a regulation baseball field from hand-hewn red rock indigenous to the area. The ballpark became the home of a semi-pro team that drew thousands of people to Elk City to enjoy America’s favorite pastime. On the east edge of the park lies the Rodeo Arena. Each Labor Day Weekend for over fifty years, the Elk City Rodeo of Champions has preserved Elk City’s western heritage by providing three nights of action-packed rodeo competition sanctioned by the PRCA. Old Town Museum Complex 16 Broneta Evans Broneta Evans and husband purchased an OX-5 powered Eagle Rock in 1927. She accompanied her husband on many barnstorming trips. She soloed in April, 1928. Broneta was pleased when the Coffman Mono-Coupe, also OX-5 pow ered, came along. She hated climbing in and out of the Eagle Rock. But the Coffman had the stick hanging from the ceiling and Broneta was never able to land the airplane without a great deal of difficulty. Plane number 3 was a Curtis Pusher and it was such fun to fly. They used the plane in their farm operation to count cattle, check windmills, fences, even shot some coyotes from it. Along with the purchase of a shiny new Taylorcraft came word her hus band could no longer pass the physical. Broneta got real serious about learn ing to fly in a professional manner and has owned 16 airplanes. DOUGLAS J. DuPEROW Scorer During the war she joined CAP, flew search missions and helped sell war bonds. Broneta joined the 99s after World War II. She held most offices at the Chapter level, Section and International level. She was International President of 99s for two years. She was one of the 38 charter members of the Oklahoma Flying Farmers and served as Secretary for six years. She helped organize the National organization (now International Flying Farmers). She was Oklahoma Flying Farmer Queen in 1954 and was Oklahoma Flying FarmerWoman of the year in 1984. Mrs. Evans has just completed the history of the beginnings of the Flying Farmer organization and published a book. Broneta Evans loves air racing. She flew in the Power Puff Derby three times. She says, “while I didn’t win, what happened was just as good. It caused me to visit places where I would never have gone, be involved in so many pleasant and interesting activities, and best of all, given me so many friends all over the U.S., Canada and really, around the world.” Flying from the very beginning has been a wonderful part of Bronta Evans’ life.
