HC-SB-61-305 Propeller - Propeller Mounting Bolt Replacement and Torque Inspection
Beechcraft King Air 360 · Service Bulletins
Overview
This service bulletin, HC-SB-61-305, issued by Hartzell Propeller Inc. on June 26, 2008, addresses critical safety concerns regarding the propeller mounting bolts on specific Beechcraft King Air models. It applies to the King Air C90GT, B200GT, B300, and B300C aircraft equipped with Hartzell propellers installed in 2007 or 2008. The bulletin outlines the necessary inspections and replacement procedures for propeller mounting bolts to prevent potential propeller separation, which could lead to severe accidents. The document emphasizes the importance of torque specifications and provides compliance timelines for inspections and replacements based on the total time since new (TSN) of the propellers. Pilots and maintenance personnel are advised to follow the instructions closely to ensure safety and compliance with FAA regulations.
- Affected aircraft models include Beechcraft King Air C90GT, B200GT, B300, and B300C.
- Propeller mounting bolts must be inspected and potentially replaced to prevent propeller separation.
- Normal installation torque for mounting bolts is 100 to 105 ft-lbs (136 to 142 N•m).
- A breakaway torque check should be performed at 90 ft-lbs (122 N•m) to ensure bolts are not over-torqued.
- Immediate action is required for propellers with over 600 hours TSN to replace mounting bolts.

Planning Information
The service bulletin details the affected propeller models and serial numbers, specifically the Hartzell HC-E4N-3(G,N) and HC-B4MP-3C, installed on King Air C90GT, B200GT, B300, and B300C aircraft. It warns of the risks associated with bolt failure, including propeller separation, and outlines the need for torque inspections due to a calibration failure of the torque wrench used during installation.
Compliance
The bulletin specifies compliance actions based on the total time since new (TSN) of the propellers. For propellers with less than 200 hours TSN, a torque check must be performed before reaching 200 hours or within 100 flight hours. For propellers with more than 600 hours TSN, immediate bolt replacement is required before further flight.
Accomplishment Instructions
Instructions for performing the torque inspection and bolt replacement are provided. The normal installation torque is specified as 100 to 105 ft-lbs (136 to 142 N•m), with a breakaway torque check at 90 ft-lbs (122 N•m) to avoid over-torquing. Detailed steps for loosening, inspecting, and re-torquing the bolts are included.
Material Information
The bulletin lists the required materials for the replacement of mounting bolts, including part numbers and quantities needed for compliance with the service bulletin.
Hartzell Contact Information
For further assistance, Hartzell Propeller Inc. provides contact details for their product support team, including phone and email information.
Safety notes
- WARNING: BOLT FAILURE MAY RESULT IN SEPARATION OF THE PROPELLER FROM THE AIRCRAFT, leading to potential death or serious injury.
- Unusual or abnormal vibration demands immediate inspection for possible bolt failure.

Effectivity (1) Hartzell HC-E4N-3(G,N) lightweight turbine propellers installed by Hawker Beechcraft Company in 2007 or 2008 on new King Air C90GT or B200GT aircraft with aircraft serial number and propeller serial number listed in Table 1 of this Service Bulletin are affected by this Service Bulletin. (2) Hartzell HC-B4MP-3C steel hub propellers installed by Hawker Beechcraft Company in 2007 or 2008 on new King Air B300 or B300C aircraft with aircraft serial number and propeller serial number listed in Table 1 of this Service Bulletin are affected by this Service Bulletin. NOTE: Table 1 lists the affected aircraft model and serial number and the propeller serial number. This table is sorted by the aircraft model and serial number. B. Reason WARNING: BOLT FAILURE MAY RESULT IN SEPARATION OF THE PROPELLER FROM THE AIRCRAFT. FAILURE MAY RESULT IN DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, AND/OR SUBSTANTIAL PROPERTY DAMAGE. UNUSUAL OR ABNORMAL VIBRATION DEMANDS IMMEDIATE INSPECTION FOR POSSIBLE BOLT FAILURE. PROPELLER SEPARATION MAY OR MAY NOT BE PROCEEDED BY VIBRATION. (1) The Hawker Beechcraft Company informed Hartzell Propeller Inc. that the propellers were installed on the affected aircraft at the factory using a torque wrench that later failed a calibration test. Refer to Table 1. (2) The torque wrench used during installation of the propellers on the aircraft exceeded the specified mounting torque of 100 to 105 ft. lbs. for the mounting bolts. (3) A check of the torque on the mounting bolts is required to verify the safety of the propeller installation and condition of the mounting bolts. (4) When installed with the incorrect torque, the mounting bolts will experience stresses that can damage the mounting bolt and require bolt replacement before propeller overhaul. © 2008 - Hartzell Propeller Inc. - All rights reserved HC-SB-61-305 Page 2 of 13 Jun 26/08 HARTZELL PROPELLER INC.
