THOMAS ANDERSON INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS - XPM1 SERIES WITH INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS (ICA) CESSNA MODEL 180, 185 & 188 XPM1 Series Tailwheel Modification DRAWING DATE REVISION BY XP-INS-9401 December 28, 2020 F LLB XP-INS-9401 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS – XPM1 SERIES WITH INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS (ICA) CESSNA MODEL 180, 185 & 188 XPM1 SERIES TAILWHEEL MODIFICATION 12-28-20 REV F Sheet 1 of 7 1.0 General 1.1 The following instructions cover the installation of Mr. Thomas Anderson XPM1 SERIES TAILWHEEL ASSEMBLIES and related parts for the Cessna Model 180, 185 and 188 aircraft. 1.2 Mr. Thomas Anderson manufactured tailgear parts, which have Cessna items listed as optional (see parts list 83FS8901), may be substituted for the original part without replacing the whole XPM1 SERIES TAILWHEEL assembly as long as the original manufactured Cessna tailgear equipment is retained in the assembly. 1.3 All Cessna tailgear parts removed and replaced with manufactured parts shall be done in accordance with the approved Cessna 180,185 or 188 service manual and parts catalog for the year, make and model affected. 1.4 All Cessna tailwheel parts removed and replaced with XPM1 SERIES TAILWHEELS shall be done in accordance with XP-INS-9401 instructions, the applicable instructions in AC43.13, the approved Cessna 180, 185 or 188 service manual and parts catalog for the year, make and model affected. 1.5 The tailwheel lock system is optional for all models of the Cessna 180, 185, and 188. Both locking and non locking. Forks shown on the parts lists PL83FSO8901 are optional for both locking and non locking. If locking is chosen, then all parts associated with locking tailwheels must be used. If non locking is chosen, then only the locking mechanical actuator parts will be omitted. The operator must placard the lock lever and controls ”Tail Wheel Lock disconnected”. All unused items must be secured as to not interfere with existing installed equipment. 2.0 Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) : This supplemental document is designed to satisfy 14 CFR 23.1529 “Instructions for Continued Airworthiness” required with installation. 2.1 Refer to the Cessna 180/185/188 Service manual, Section 5, the Landing Gear Wheels and Brakes and the Cessna 180/185/188 parts catalog for the specific Model and serial number listed with each product. 2.2 The Cessna 180, 185 and 188 use fixed conventional spring landing gear and a tail wheel. This ICW refers to the tailwheel or tailgear assembly and is bolted into a socket that is located at station 233. The tailwheel is controlled by the rudder steering cables with a spring interconnect that is controlled from the cockpit by the rudder pedals. The tailwheel is also controlled on some models by a lock system to hold the tailwheel in trail for extra control during cross wind landings. The lock is controlled by a lever actuated Bowden cable that is spring loaded to the un-lock position. This lever is located next to the flap handle and is well marked. 2.3 The tailgear will be routinely inspected at 50 hour intervals as specified by the Cessna 180/185/188 service manual. Steel hardware and the aluminum structure are susceptible to rust and corrosion and the relationship between these metals should be checked at normal inspection intervals. Use the cleaning requirements as specified in the Cessna 180/185/188 service manual. Refer to Corrosion Inspection and MR. The tailgear is not life limited, nor is any of the attach hardware. It is recommended to change the hardware with new when changing the tailgear or after any unusually hard landing as a precaution. 2.3.1 The Titanium tailgear spring and components within models XPM 1-5, XPM 1-8, XPM 1-3-8, and XPM 1-5-5 will be routinely inspected at 50 hour intervals as specified by the Cessna 180/185 service manual, through the removable tail cone. The Titanium tailgear spring is not susceptible to normal corrosion because of the basic properties of Titanium; however, any steel hardware and the aluminum structure is susceptible and the relationship between these metals should be checked at normal inspection intervals for rust and corrosion. Use the cleaning requirements of Titanium as specified in FAA AC43-13- 1B Chapter 6 Corrosion Inspection and Protection, Section 11, specifically paragraph 6-181, Other Metals and Alloys. The Titanium tailgear spring is not life limited, nor is any of the attach hardware. It is recommended to change the hardware with new replacements when changing tailgear springs or after any unusually hard landing as a precaution. 2.4 If a hard landing is experienced, use the troubleshooting and inspection procedures in the Cessna 180/185/188 service manual, Section 5, the Landing Gear Wheels and Brakes. If the tailgear or structure surrounding the tailgear is damaged, the tailgear must be replaced or sent back to the manufacture for repair before returning the aircraft to service. No special tools are required for any inspection of the tailgear. 2.5 Section IV - Airworthiness Limitations – FAA Approved Data Scope: The Airworthiness Limitations Section is FAA approved and specifies maintenance required under 14 CFR Part 43.16 and 91.403 of the Federal Aviation Regulations unless an alternative program has been FAA approved. Airworthiness Limitations: There are no airworthiness limitations associated with the installation of Mr. Thomas Anderson XPM1 SERIES TAILWHEEL ASSEMBLIES and related parts for the Cessna Model 180, 185 and 188 aircraft. 3.0 The tailwheel installation procedures are for these assemblies and are as follows: Cessna Model 180 and 185 14” XPM 1-1 and 1-2 Cessna Model 180 and 185 10” XPM 1-6 and 1-7 Cessna Model 180 and 185 14” XPM 1-5 Cessna Model 180 and 185 10” XPM 1-8 Cessna Model 188 14” XPM 1-3-1 and 1-3-2 Cessna Model 188 10” XPM 1-5-1 and 1-5-2 Cessna Model 188 14” XPM 1-3-8 MR. THOMAS ANDERSON INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS - XPM1 SERIES WITH INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS (ICA) CESSNA MODEL 180, 185 & 188 XPM1 Series Tailwheel Modification DRAWING DATE REVISION BY XP-INS-9401 December 28, 2020 F LLB XP-INS-9401 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS – XPM1 SERIES WITH INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS (ICA) CESSNA MODEL 180, 185 & 188 XPM1 SERIES TAILWHEEL MODIFICATION 12-28-20 REV F Sheet 3 of 7 Cessna Model 188 10” XPM 1-5-5 4.0 TAILWHEEL - REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT 4.1 Chock aircraft to assure a stable work environment 4.2 Elevate tail and remove rudder steering cables from the turning arm 4.3 Remove AN5 bolts from old upper bracket 4.4 Heat up the old upper bracket in such a way as to not damage the tailgear spring. A hot air, heat gun. Heat will swell the aluminum bracket away from the spring. Ref: Cessna 180,185 or 188 Service Manual. 4.5 Using a mallet, knock off the old hub assembly. Use care not to damage the tailgear spring 4.6 Clean dirt, grease and glue from the tailgear spring 4.7 Inspect tailgear spring outside diameter size and condition of bolt holes.Also inspect forward tailgear spring area, including saddle and support, for corrosion. Replace AN5 bolts with NAS1105 bolts supplied. For aircraft with gross weights above 2650 lbs. ensure that the bracket assembly (P/N 0712218-1AGW) is attached to P/N 0712217-1AGW with AD-5 rivets, minimum. 4.8 Measure hub assembly and tailgear spring to determine that a .0005“L to .0025”L light drive fit is maintained before assembly. Bonding of the assembly is recommended. Coat the spring and inside of hub with bonding agent, see service manual. Slide/drive hub assy onto spring. After 5/16 holes are aligned, ream .3125 to obtain optimum bolt fit. 4.9 Install NAS bolts & tiedown ring. Torque self-locking nut to 85 to 100 inch lbs. If tailwheel lock is used, tighten castle nut enough to remove excess play between hub and lock bellcrank. 4.10 CAUTION: If heat is used on the new bracket, the temperature must not exceed 100° or 212° F (the boiling point of water). If higher temperatures are used, the heat treatment of the hub fitting will be affected and the strength of the part will be reduced leading to possible service failure. 4.11 Install new NAS1105 bolts and attaching hardware supplied into hub assembly p/n 25669 series or 3412-2. 4.12 Hook up rudder steering system. Cables should have slight tension -NO MORE THAN 0-1 LB.- or the steering arm will be working against itself 4.13 P/N 3233 applies pressure on P/N 3408 steel washer; therefore it is set tight when new and should be kept adjusted to maintain enough pressure as not to allow the tailwheel to move more than 2 - 5 degrees when MR. Tire pressure is to be 20 - 40 psi. for 14” and 25 - 55 psi. for 10” assemblies. 4.14 Inspect to confirm that a thick walled support tube (.875 OD x .120 wall) is installed (p/n XP0742150-2, 0742150-2, XP0742100-5 or 0742100-5) inside of the saddle fitting. If a light support tube is found, replace. 4.15 Use of tailwheel lock eliminates any chance of shimmy. If shimmy does occur, DO NOT ALLOW TO CONTINUE. It may cause damage to the tailwheel or aircraft. Contact your sales representative to correct the problem. 5.0 TAILGEAR SPRING - REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT 5.1 For the tailgear spring TGS installation, use the Cessna 180/185/188 individual service manuals for year make and model being altered by this approval in addition to these instructions. 5.2 Remove stinger and tail light positive wire connection. 5.3 Remove the 2ea cotter pins, MS24665-134 and 2ea MS20392-1C33 clevis pins holding in the tailgear spring support. 5.4 Generously coat the area outside and inside with an FAA and manufacturer’s approved penetrating oil. 5.5 Use XP TGS-001 drift removal tool or equivalent to drive out the old tailgear spring support. 5.6 If parts are rusted together it may be necessary to cut the support tube with an angled pneumatic cut-off wheel, 1/16 width wheel works best. The area to cut will be through the rubber bushing and tube just to right and left of the saddle. Use extreme care not to damage any structure or the saddle assembly. Noxious fumes and dust will be created so use adequate safety equipment for eyes, lungs, ears, and hands. 5.7 Once support is removed, pull the old tailgear assembly clear of the aircraft. Clean and deburr for re-use. If support is sacrificed it will need to be replaced. 5.8 If replacing the original part or the same size tailgear spring XP1642000-18 or XP0742152-2, install per the Cessna 180/185/188 individual service manuals for year make and model. 5.9 New larger TGS approved under this STC, XP0742152-2 and XP0742152-3 will be installed in the same manner with the exception of a minor alteration to the rear bulkhead clearance hole at station 230.187 5.10 The clearance hole may be enlarged as to give .010 minimum clearance. The lower portion of the hole may be flush with the bottom of the inside lip of the bulkhead. Use a rotary file, hand file, or barrel sander. Finish with 180 grit minimum sand paper. For corrosion protection treat bare metal per the Cessna 180/185/188 individual service manual for year make and model and AC 43.13-1B, chapter 6, section 8. Apply a chemical MR. THOMAS ANDERSON INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS - XPM1 SERIES WITH INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS (ICA) CESSNA MODEL 180, 185 & 188 XPM1 Series Tailwheel Modification DRAWING DATE REVISION BY XP-INS-9401 December 28, 2020 F LLB XP-INS-9401 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS – XPM1 SERIES WITH INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS (ICA) CESSNA MODEL 180, 185 & 188 XPM1 SERIES TAILWHEEL MODIFICATION 12-28-20 REV F Sheet 5 of 7 conversion coating per MIL-C-81706 and apply primer and or overcoat as specified within the 180/185/188 individual service manual painting and refinishing sections. 5.11 Tips for easier installation: 5.11.1 Measure and check the fit of the forward rubber hose end, S51-12 or spring cap 0742151-1 bushing into the 0712218-1 bracket assembly. 5.11.2 It should be a light press fit. Sand or machine size rubber on the installed end part as required to obtain fit. It is best to do this when the rubber is very cold to get the best results of sanding or machining. 5.11.3 Clean parts thoroughly. Put a light coat of grease per MIL-G-81322, herein grease, on the OD and ID of the tailgear spring and 0712218-1 bracket assembly. 5.11.4 Install the 2 each 0742112 or Cessna 0742179 -1, 0742180-2 side rubber bushings into place in the aft tailcone side castings 0712305-3 and 0712305-4. Apply light grease to the sides that will contact the saddle assembly. 5.11.5 Hang the forward rubber hose end, S51-12 or spring cap 0742151-1 bushing on the very edge of the forward spring end, say ¼ inch. 5.11.6 Install the TGS assembly first making contact with the hanging hose end and spring cap into the forward bracket assembly. This action assures a three point alignment, forward end and both left and right supports. As the spring is installed push it into the edge of the side bushings until the support hole is lined up. 5.11.7 Doing it this way it locates the forward end bushing exactly where it needs to be. 5.12 NOTE: Sometimes new # 30 holes will need to be drilled into the old re-usable steel saddle and mating support. Original steel support tubes were drilled in place horizontal at the factory when the parts were assembled and the holes in the saddle and the support will nearly be impossible to re-assemble. If new holes are to be drilled, drill vertically, as all the late model aircraft were drilled, once spring is removed. Preform this function on the bench or in a machining center to assure accuracy. If the holes are badly worn, oval or double drilled, it is permissable to repair the holes in the steel saddle by repairing the damaged hole in accordance with AWS D17-1 or the metal repair provisions of AC 43.13, Chapter 4, section 5, paragraph 4-83. It is possible to place a rossette weld over the damaged hole, redrilling the hole, cleaning and deburring. This tailgear saddle repair is not considered a major repair, see 14 CFR 43 appendix A for definition. 6.0 Complete FAA form 337 or log book entries as required. Revise equipment list weight and balance prior to return to service. MR.
