E Issue Date: Dec. 23, 2005 Technical Content is FAA Approved B-SERIES AIRCRAFT HEATERS SUPERCEDURE DATA FOR CURRENT HEATER CONFIGURATION PREFACE: Aircraft installations using JANITROL B-SERIES HEATERS have undergone certain product improvements that are available to users in order to upgrade the performance of their Combustion Heaters. This Service Letter is to advise users of those improvements and recommend upgrade of their particular Heater at the next required Major Overhaul. The purpose of this Letter is to reduce field problems with older technology Heaters through supercedure to later, improved designs. 1. The attached chart shows the supercedure data by aircraft installation and JANITROL HEATER MODEL for that installation. The chart is annotated with an asterisk (*) indicating the current production model of a given Heater. Also noted is the major change element between models showing the continual upgrade of that model. 2. It is recommended that users upgrade their Heaters to the current production model at the next required major overhaul (see following paragraph regarding FAA AD-NOTE #96-20-07 and required overhaul period). For example, the PA31T/T1 CHEYENNE original installation used a 62D33 JANITROL HEATER and subsequent upgrades involving joint effort between PIPER and JANITROL engineering have resulted in the 10E21-4EL as the latest version incorporating an improved ignition system, sparkplug, fuel feed, and combustion tube. 3. FAA AD-NOTE #96-20-07 on these same B-Series Heaters requires periodic inspections to assure the integrity and airworthiness of the Combustion Tube in each Heater. Heaters failing a pressure decay test at these periodic inspection intervals require a major overhaul including replacement of the Combustion Tube (generally referred to as a MAJOR overhaul). The inspection interval then reverts back to the initial 500 hour period or the same as a new Heater. It is at this point of major overhaul that upgrade of the Heater to current production specifications is recommended. 4. Users will find that problems are reduced; spare parts, service, and future upgrades will be more available to continue trouble free flying. 5. Actual installation authority is determined by the airframe manufacturer and installers should refer to the manufacturer’s current publications or obtain FAA Field Approval for change in original equipment. The new models (EL Series) are form, fit, and function interchangeable with the original models; there are no installation differences.
