Effectivity (1) South Wind combustion heater models 921, 930, 937, 940, 944, 945, 977, 978, 979, 8240, 8253, 8259, and 8472 (all dash number and model number variants) are affected by this Service Letter (SL). (a) Aircraft Type/Model and combustion heater part numbers affected by this SL are shown in Table 1. NOTE: Table 1 is for reference only and is not an all-inclusive list of aircraft affected by this SL. It is the responsibility of the owner/operator to verify whether an affected combustion heater is installed. WARNING: DO NOT USE OBSOLETE OR OUTDATED INFORMATION. PERFORM ALL INSPECTIONS OR WORK IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MOST RECENT REVISION OF THIS SERVICE LETTER. INFORMATION CONTAINED HEREIN MAY BE SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGED FROM EARLIER REVISIONS. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THIS SERVICE LETTER OR THE USE OF OBSOLETE INFORMATION MAY CREATE AN UNSAFE CONDITION THAT MAY RESULT IN DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, AND/OR SUBSTANTIAL PROPERTY DAMAGE. Reason (1) A condition has been reported where deterioration of the combustion tube on affected South Wind combustion heaters could lead to smoke and fumes entering the cabin. (2) Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2017-06-03 was issued to address inspection and repair or disabling requirements of affected South Wind combustion heaters. D. Description (1) This Service Letter provides notification of AD 2017-06-03. (2) This service letter contains AMOC options as terminating action for AD 2017-06-03. Refer to section 2.A, Materials Required. E. Approval (1) FAA acceptance has been obtained on the technical data in this publication that affects type design. New or later FAA approved revision - 8000 Series Supplemental Owner’s Manual for Janitrol Aero Modified Meggitt/South Wind Heaters. (2) Applicable South Wind 900 Series Heater Maintenance Manual. (3) Applicable aircraft POH or AFM. (4) Aircraft maintenance manual (as applicable). G. Weight and Balance (1) No Change 2. Material Required A. Three (3) AMOC options are available as terminating action for AD 2017-06-03: (1) Replace affected combustion heater with one listed in Option 1 column, Overhaul Exchange, of Table 1. (a) The Overhaul Exchange is a Hartzell Engine Technologies (HET) overhauled South Wind heater modified per HET’s AMOC to AD 2017-06-03. (b) Part Numbers shown in Table 1, Option 1, are HET Catalog Part Numbers. AMOC overhauled heaters will display an OEM Part Number along with AMOC information on the data tag. (c) Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) is per HET manual ES1035 Rev. New or later FAA approved revision. (2) Replace affected combustion heater with one listed in Option 2 column, New Exchange, of Table 1. (a) A New Exchange is replacement of the affected South Wind heater with a new HET PMA or STC approved replacement heater. (3) Field-replace affected heater components utilizing Alternate Methods of Compliance Kits found in Table 2. (a) Kits are available to allow the field to upgrade affected South Wind heaters per HET’s AMOC to AD 2017-06-03. (b) Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) is per HET Manual ES1035 Rev.
