Overview

This document provides a maintenance overview for the Cessna 402C, focusing on the exhaust system and its components. It outlines inspection schedules, procedures, and part numbers for various exhaust system components. The information is intended for maintenance personnel and pilots who need to ensure the airworthiness of the exhaust system. Key maintenance intervals and specific inspection criteria are detailed to help maintain the aircraft's performance and safety.

  • Visual inspection of exhaust system every 50 hours or 30 days.
  • Remove and inspect tailpipes for cracks and corrosion every 12 months.
  • Replace multi-segment V-band clamps every 500 hours of operation.
  • Remove exhaust system every 2500 hours or 12 years, whichever comes first.
  • Inspect for internal pitting, especially in Inconel components.

Exhaust System Inspection

The document specifies that a visual inspection of the exhaust system should be conducted every 50 hours or 30 days of operation. Additionally, tailpipes must be removed and inspected for cracks, corrosion, holes, or distortion every 12 months. A pressure test of the exhaust system is also required annually.

Maintenance Intervals

It is recommended to replace multi-segment V-band clamps every 500 hours of operation. The entire exhaust system should be removed from slip-joints aft to all turbocharger components every 2500 hours of operation or every 12 years, whichever comes first.

Inspection of Components

Inspect tailpipes for internal pitting and wall thickness, especially at the outside radius and support brackets. The turbo header should be checked for internal pitting, warped or cracked flow dividers, and thin sections.

Material Considerations

Some exhaust parts are made from Inconel, which is more difficult to inspect due to its tendency to corrode from the inside. It is important to remove carbon buildup for proper inspection. If welds show pinholes, the component may fail an internal inspection.

Part Numbers

The document lists various part numbers for exhaust system components, including stack assemblies, slip joints, and clamps. For example, the right-hand stack assembly is part number 9910295-14/30, and the left-hand stack assembly is 9910295-13/29.

Safety notes

  • Inconel components may corrode internally without visible signs, requiring thorough inspection.

Remove/inspect tailpipes for cracks, corrosion, holes or distortion every 12 months. Inspect/pressure test exhaust system every 12 months. Replace multi-segment V-band clamps every 500 hrs of operation. Remove exhaust system from slip-joints aft to all turbo- charger components every 2500 hrs of operation or 12 yrs whichever occurs first and send to approved repair facility. Inspect tailpipes for internal pitting and wall thickness especially at the outside radius, which is the thin section, and at support bracket. Inspect joints for freedom of movement and distortion. Inspect turbo header for internal pitting, warped or cracked flow divider and thin sections. Some of the parts for this aircraft are Inconel. Although Inconel is a far superior metal, it is more difficult to inspect. Inconel tends to corrode from the inside without showing signs of flaking or bulging like stainless steel. The carbon on the inside of the exhaust parts should be removed to properly inspect the components. If the welds are developing pinholes the component may not pass an internal inspection. Slip fit stacks should be ordered as a complete assembly to ensure good joint integrity with smooth slip fits.
