The ten states with the largest American Indian & Alaska Native alone or in-combination population in 2015 were California (800,000), Oklahoma (550,000), Arizona (370,000), Texas (300,000), New York (250,000), New Mexico (220,000), Washington (170,000), North Carolina (150,000), Florida (100,000), and Michigan (75,000). Alaska has approximately 100,000 Eskimos and Aleuts. The largest number of people who identified with an American Indian tribal grouping, either alone or in combination, identified as Cherokee (819,000). The Navajo tribal grouping had the largest number of individuals who identified with one tribal grouping and no other race (287,000). Among the largest American Indian tribal groupings, Blackfeet had the highest proportion that reported more than one tribal grouping or race. Almost 75% of Blackfeet individuals reported an additional race and/or tribal grouping. The largest Native tribal grouping, either alone or in combination, was Yup’ik (34,000), followed by Inupiat (33,000). Yup’ik also had the greatest number of people who identified with one tribal grouping and no other race (29,000). Among all Alaska Native tribal groupings, Tlingit-Haida had the highest proportion who reported more than one tribal grouping or race. 42% of Tlingit-Haida individuals reported an additional race and/or tribal grouping. Population figures have been increasing at a rate of more than 50% per decade since 1960. There is no one Federal or tribal definition that establishes a person's identity as Native American. Government Agencies use different criteria for determining who is a Native American. Similarly, tribal groups have varying requirements for determining tribal membership. There are more than 300 Federal Indian reservations and 574 federally recognized tribes in the United States including about 200 Alaska Native village groups. An Indian reservation is an area of land reserved for Indian use. The name comes from the early days of Indian-white relations when Indian tribes relinquished land through treaties, reserving a portion for their own use. Congressional acts, Executive orders, and agreements have also created reservations. Many reservations today, however, have some non-Indian residents and non-Indian landowners. Tribe among the North American Indians originally meant a body of persons bound together by blood ties who were socially, politically, and religiously organized, and who lived together, occupying a definite territory and speaking a common language or dialect.

With the relegation of Indians to reservations, the word tribe developed a number of different meanings. Today, it can be a distinct group within an Indian village or community, a large number of communities, several different groups or villages speaking different languages but sharing a common government, or a widely scattered number of villages with a common language but no common government. According to a 2015 estimate by the DOI’s Office of Indian Affairs, approximately 1.8 million Native Americans living on or adjacent to reservations. The remaining 3.2 million Native Americans and Alaska Natives reside in cities and suburbs across the country. i A special U.S. Senate committee charged with investigating fraud and mismanagement in the Office of Indian Affairs has recommended adoption of what it calls "A New Federalism,"" in which the federal government would abolish the BIA and transfer annual federal appropriations directly to tribal governments. The committee said new agreements are needed between the federal governments and the tribes "that both allow American Indians to run their own affairs and pledge permanent federal support for tribal governments." These new agreements would not affect any existing treaty rights or alter the legal status of tribal governments. An Office of Federal-Tribal Relations (OFTR) would be created within the executive office of the President. The OFTR would be responsible for negotiating and overseeing implementation of formal agreements with federally recognized Indian tribes. "The agreements will allow any tribe that so chooses to exit the current bureaucracy of federal Indian programs and to receive and use at its own discretion a proportional share of the federal Indian budget." The committee proposes that funding be allocated to tribal governments based solely on population figures. The special committee also recommended that each House of Congress create a permanent full committee on Indian affairs, with additional staff specifically assigned to perform oversight and investigations. The U.S., upon ratification of an agreement by both a tribe and the federal government, would provide the tribe with an annual Tribal Self-Governance Grant (TSGG), equaling its fair share of the current federal Indian budget. The size of the grant would be proportional to the population base of the tribe. Each grant would be supplemented by an annual cost-of-living allowance. Equally important, there would be a transfer from the Department of the Interior’s Office of Indian Affairs and Indian Health Service and any other federal agency with Indian-related programs to the contracting tribes, such assets as necessary for the tribe to carry out their new responsibilities under the agreement. This 26th Edition of Reference Encyclopedia of the American Indian is divided into four main sections. The first section contains source listings. Each listing gives address, phone number, contact and, in most cases, a brief description of activities and pertinent information. Listings are arranged either alphabetically or alpha-geographically. At the beginning of each section there is an explanatory note detailing the type of sources listed and the manner in which they are arranged. The length of each listing reflects the amount of material received from each source. Material has been researched directly from questionnaires or has been gathered from other reliable sources. For further information on any listed source, it is suggested that the reader write to the address or call the number given in the listing. The second section is solely Canadian listings; the third section of the book is a bibliography of approximately 11,000 in-print books. Listed alphabetically, each book gives basic bibliographic information. The alphabetical section is broken down into a subject categories section with corresponding titles listed for each category. A publishers index is provided at the end giving the publishers' addresses and phone numbers. The fourth section contains approximately 3,000 listings of which there are more than 1,500 biographical sketches of prominent Native Americans involved in Indian Affairs, education, healthcare, business, the arts and professions, as well as non-Indians active in Indian affairs, history, art, anthropology, archaeology, etc., and the many fields to which the subject of the American Indian is related. Akers. The tribe is considered a phantom village that serves over 100 members from various villages. The original site for Chuloonawick is located between two established villages of Emmonak and Kotlik. The Yupik meaning of Chuloonawick is "a place to salt fish". Chuloonawick Tribe has an office located in the village of Emmonak, which is located 120 miles Northwest of Bethel, Alaska; and 490 air miles from Alaska's largest city, Anchorage. We are thirteen members, one from each village, and five from Barrow representing approximately 6300 enrolled members. Our terms are staggered with elections held every three years. We encourage you to participate and become a candidate for one of the council seats at the next election, General meetings of the Council are held at 6:30 PM on the first Thursday evening of each month in the ICAS Board room in Barrow, Alaska. Our location within our council boundaries are some of North America’s most unique regions. Bordered by the foothills of the Brooks Range to the south and the Arctic Ocean on the north and west, and Canada to the east, the area encompasses 89,000 square miles. Fifteen percent of Alaska’s land mass lies in this region, all of which is located above the Arctic Circle. Located within our boundaries geographically, the largest political subdivision in North America, are the native villages of Barrow; Atqasuk, Anaktuvuk Pass, Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Point Hope, and Wainwright, Point Lay and the petroleum/industrial complex of Prudhoe Bay/Kuparuk. Akimel O’otham (Pima) Historically, the Akimel O’otham and Tohono O’odham were some of the world’s premier basketmakers, and the Tohono O’odham remain very active in this field. Pee-Posh (Maricopa) The Maricopa people were small bands living along the lower Gila and Colorado rivers. Each of these bands migrated eastward at different times. The Xalychidom (Maricopa of Lehi), left around 1825-1830. The last of these bands is said to have left the Colorado River in the late 1830’s. Eventually these bands came together and became collectively known as the Maricopa. As they migrated eastward, they came upon the Pima tribe and established a relationship. Both tribes provided protection against the Yuman and Apache tribes. The Maricopa Tribe is known for their red clay pottery work.
