May 30, 2007 Purpose: This document provides the removal and re-installation instructions for a main windshield hot plate on the Baron Aircraft. Instructions: 1) Mask around the hot plate and windshield with standard masking. Peel back masking 1/2 inch from hot plate. 2) Apply a 1 to 2 inch metal tape to the standard masking around the edge of hot plate. 3) Remove hot plate from windshield by using a metal spatula to loosen sealant along the outside edge. 4) Use a razorblade to remove and discard VHB tape from windshield and hot plate. 5) Use a razorblade to remove PR-1425 sealant from hot plate (inboard surface side only) until sealant is flush with plate surface. 6) Remove the metal tape from window and replace it with 1 or 2 inch masking tape around edge of hot plate location. 7) Clean the windshield with isopropyl alcohol. Issue: Initial Page 14 of 15 Communiqué # 113 8) Prepare windshield acrylic by sanding the surfaces that will come in contact with PR- 1425 sealant with white 3M scotchbrite #98 pad (be sure scotchbrite does not have silicone in it). 9) Apply PR-142 primer to the acrylic surface that will be in contact with PR-1425 sealant. Apply only a thin layer of primer with one wipe across the surface (Rubbing back and forth across the surface or applying too much primer will cause the acrylic to craze). CAUTION: ONLY PREPARE THE ACRYLIC SURFACES THAT WILL COME IN CONTACT WITH THE PR-1425 SEALANT. 10) Apply 1/8 inch strip of VHB tape to the hot plate. 11) Apply PR-142 primer to the glass hot plate (inboard surface side only) at the expected sealant bond line. 12) Carefully position the hot plate over the prepared surface and press down onto the windshield. 13) Apply PR-1425 sealant between the hot plate and windshield. CAUTION: DO NOT ALLOW SEALANT TO PENETRATE INTO THE DAY LIGHT OPENING AREA OF THE HOT PLATE. SEALANT MUST PRESS OUTWARD FROM THE VHB TAPE. 14) Remove the masking tape. 15) Allow the sealant to cure for approximately 4 hours before removing the window masking. 16) Touch up all pits and voids with sealant. 17) Allow the sealant to cure for approximately 24 to 36 hours before releasing the aircraft for flight.
