Overview

This document is an Emergency Procedures Checklist for the Cessna 172N. It provides pilots with critical procedures to follow in various emergency situations, including engine failure, electrical fires, and landing with a flat tire. The checklist is designed to ensure that pilots can quickly reference essential actions during emergencies, enhancing safety and response times. It is intended for use by pilots operating the Cessna 172N, offering clear and concise instructions to manage in-flight emergencies effectively.

  • Throttle to idle during engine failure on takeoff roll.
  • Maintain 65 KIAS during engine failure immediately after takeoff.
  • Trim for best glide at 65 KIAS during in-flight engine failure.
  • Continue cranking if there's an engine fire during startup.
  • Turn off the master switch for electrical fires in flight.

Engine Failure During Takeoff Roll

In the event of an engine failure during the takeoff roll, the pilot should immediately reduce the throttle to idle, apply brakes, retract wing flaps, set the mixture to idle cut-off, turn off the fuel selector, and switch off the magneto and master switches.

Engine Failure Immediately After Takeoff

If the engine fails immediately after takeoff, maintain an airspeed of 65 KIAS (with flaps up), set the mixture to idle cut-off, turn off the fuel selector and magnetos, and adjust wing flaps as required. The master switch should also be turned off.

Engine Failure in Flight

For an engine failure in flight, trim for best glide at 65 KIAS, select a suitable landing site, and fly towards it. Set the fuel selector to both, adjust the mixture as required, and turn on the magnetos. If a restart is not possible, prepare for an off-airport landing.

Engine Fire During Start Up

If an engine fire occurs during startup, continue cranking the engine. If the engine starts, throttle up to 1700 RPM and then shut down the engine. If it fails to start, set the throttle to full open, mixture to idle cut-off, and continue cranking. Turn off the fuel selector and prepare the fire extinguisher.

Electrical Fire in Flight

In case of an electrical fire in flight, turn off the master switch and all other switches except for ignition. Close the vents and activate the fire extinguisher. If electrical power is necessary after extinguishing the fire, turn the master switch back on and check circuit breakers.

Safety notes

  • Always commit highlighted emergency procedures to memory for quick recall.
  • Ensure proper ventilation after discharging a fire extinguisher in a closed cabin.
