Overview

This document provides emergency procedures and operational checklists specifically for the Cessna 172R. It is designed for pilots to follow in various emergency situations, ensuring safety and proper handling of the aircraft. The procedures cover pre-flight checks, engine failure responses, electrical failures, and other critical situations that may arise during flight. Each section outlines specific actions to take, including checklist items and performance data relevant to emergency scenarios.

  • Best glide speed is 68 KIAS.
  • Emergency descent speed is 163 KIAS.
  • Max crosswind component is 15 knots.
  • Flaps should be set for landing as needed, typically 10 degrees for approach.
  • Mixture settings are critical: rich for takeoff and landing, idle cut-off for engine failure.

Pre-Flight Checks

The pre-flight checks include setting the parking brake, checking the fuel selector, ensuring the mixture is rich, and verifying that all switches are off. Pilots are also instructed to record ATIS/AWOS and check circuit breakers.

Engine Failure Procedures

In the event of engine failure, pilots should establish best glide speed at 68 KIAS and prepare for a landing as soon as practicable. The mixture should be set to idle cut-off, and the fuel selector cycled to both.

Electrical Failures

For electrical failures, pilots must check the volt meter and ensure that all non-essential equipment is turned off. If an electrical fire occurs, the master switch should be turned off, and the aircraft should be prepared for an emergency landing.

Emergency Descent

In an emergency descent, maintain an airspeed of 163 KIAS. The mixture should be rich, and the fuel pump should be turned on to ensure proper engine function during descent.

Landing Procedures

During landing, pilots should ensure that the flaps are set appropriately and that the landing light is on. The approach speed should be maintained between 60-70 KIAS for normal approach.

Safety notes

  • Always check circuit breakers before flight.
  • Do not reset circuit breakers in flight unless instructed by emergency procedures.
  • Maintain situational awareness during emergency procedures.
