Overview

The Cessna 172 S/R Maneuver Guide serves as a reference for pilots operating the Cessna 172S and 172R models. It outlines various flight maneuvers, including takeoff and landing procedures, stall recovery techniques, and standard flight operations. This guide emphasizes the importance of adhering to checklists and provides specific airspeed parameters for different flight phases. It is intended for both private and commercial pilot training, ensuring that pilots are well-prepared for various flight scenarios. The guide includes critical airspeed values, procedural steps, and performance standards necessary for safe and effective flight operations.

  • Rotate at 55 KIAS for takeoff.
  • Pitch for Vy at 74 KIAS during climb.
  • Final approach speed with 30° flaps is 65 KIAS.
  • Short field takeoff requires lift-off at 51 KIAS.
  • Maintain 1900-2100 RPM and 90 KIAS on downwind for landing.

Normal Takeoff

The normal takeoff procedure begins with the Takeoff Checklist and proper radio communications. Pilots should line up on the runway and apply full power, using right rudder as needed. The aircraft should rotate at 55 KIAS and pitch for a Vy of 74 KIAS, maintaining approximately a 10° pitch. After takeoff, the Climb/Cruise checklist should be performed when appropriate.

Normal Landing

For normal landing, pilots must complete a Descent Checklist prior to entering the pattern, followed by the Before Landing Checklist. During the downwind leg, maintain 1900-2100 RPM and 90 KIAS. At the abeam touchdown point, reduce to 1500 RPM, deploy 10° flaps, and slow to 85 KIAS. On base, set 20° flaps and 75 KIAS, and on final approach, set 30° flaps and 65 KIAS, adding a half gust factor as needed.

Short Field Takeoff

In a short field takeoff, set flaps to 10°, complete the Takeoff Checklist, and apply full power while holding brakes. The aircraft should lift off at 51 KIAS and pitch for 56 KIAS until clearing a 50-foot obstacle, then pitch for Vy at 74 KIAS.

Soft Field Landing

For soft field landings, pilots should complete an Approach Checklist prior to entering the pattern. Maintain 1900-2100 RPM and 90 KIAS on downwind, and deploy flaps as necessary during the approach. The goal is to achieve a soft touchdown by maintaining back pressure and minimizing the risk of tail strikes.

Stalls and Slow Flight

The guide includes procedures for conducting power-off and power-on stalls, emphasizing the importance of maintaining altitude and airspeed. Recovery techniques are detailed, including reducing angle of attack and applying full power to regain control.

Safety notes

  • Always refer to the checklist during maneuvers.
  • Maintain awareness of airspeed and altitude during stalls.
