Engine Failure Immediately After Takeoff
In the event of an engine failure immediately after takeoff, if sufficient runway remains, land straight ahead. If not, maintain a safe airspeed and make shallow turns to avoid obstructions. If altitude allows, attempt a restart.
Engine Failure During Flight
If the engine fails during flight, maintain an airspeed of 100 MPH, turn on carb heat, switch fuel tanks, and activate the boost pump. Check fuel gauges for the cause, cycle the ignition, and set the transponder to 7700 for an emergency.
Forced Landing Without Power
For a forced landing without power, maintain an airspeed of 100 MPH, set the mixture to idle cut-off, turn off the fuel selector, and tighten seat belts. Flaps should be set as required within gliding distance of a field.
Engine Fire During Start
If an engine fire occurs during start, continue cranking the engine. If it starts, maintain 1700 RPM. If unsuccessful, cut off the mixture and fuel selector, and abandon the aircraft if the fire continues.
Electrical Fire
In case of an electrical fire, turn off the master switch and all electrical switches except ignition. Open vents/windows to ventilate smoke and land as soon as practical.
Safety notes
- Ensure to tighten seat belts during forced landings.
- If an engine fire occurs, abandon the aircraft if it continues after following procedures.
